Is a hot dog a sandwich? Present your case.

the debate continues
It's meat between bread with condiments. So technically I say yes. However it's shaped like a penis, so I don't know if that is a disqualifier.

meat between bread = sandwich

Let's say I make a chicken salad sandwich. Two pieces of bread with chicken salad inside. When I pick it up, little chunks of chicken fall out, because chicken salad sandwiches are not structurally sound. I then decide to, from now on, simply put the chicken salad on one slice of bread and fold it over so that nothing falls out.
Is my single bread slice chicken salad handheld a sandwich?

Dan Pashman has made a career out of quibbling over stuff like this.

If you can't say "sandwich" behind it, its not a sandwich.
Ham sandwich
turkey sandwich
roast beef sandwich
club sandwich... etc
hotdog sandwich? a hotdog is not a sandwich
I'll go out on a limb and say a burger is it's own thing as well.

i like this reasoning. I'm going to go with this.
Hotdog = NOT a sandwich.

A burger isnt a sandwich because you dont say "burger sandwich"?
ETA: grilled beef sandwich

That definition is funny because it means an open-faced sandwich is not a sandwich, a tomato sandwich isn't a sandwich, and a meat pie is a sandwich.

That seems an arbitrary distinction. Something generic like "ham" requires the "sandwich" rider for it to make any sense. Hamburgers and hotdogs are self contained concepts that don't require further descriptors. However, putting this forward as dispositive is about as persuasive as saying that roses aren't flowers because "rose flower" doesn't sound as good as "sun flower".
ETA: TIL poboys aren't sandwiches.
ETA2: If anyone tries to tell me that they say "poboy sandwich" I'm going to want their Louisiana card back

I mean I could make a case for it. If you make a turkey burger, why wouldn't you just call it a turkey sandwich? Its turkey between bread, right? But, its not a turkey sandwich bc its a burger. A burger is it's own piece of culinary genius that should be respected as such

Hotdog is a hotdog, it's own classification.

Is a burger a sandwich if you put it on sandwhich bread instead of a bun?

So is a sandwich no longer a sandwich once the meat is cooked i.e. like a burger? What about a meatball sandwich? Thats really just a burger with the meat shaped into little balls rather than a Patty.

I would say the patty of meat makes it a burger for sure. You can put cooked meats on a sandwich, such as a pulled pork sandwich or brisket sandwich.

IMO, a sandwich is a type of food where bread is basically a deliver 'vehicle' for some sort of other type of food (meat, vegetables, etc...)
By that definition, I would say that a hot dog is a sandwich. I can admit though, that I never think of a hot dog if someone mentions the word sandwich.

So, using that definition, spinach and artichoke dip with toast points would be a sandwich. You end up ensnaring many dip combinations with that definition.
