I agree with this guy:

sauce

This and only this is a sandwich

In today’s post on “What is barbecue?” I skipped past “is a hot dog a sandwich?” so quickly that I forgot to answer the question. So in the same spirit in which someone can boldly declare that only smoked, slow-cooked pork is barbecue, here is my minimal definition of a sandwich:

A sandwich is any solid or semi-solid filling between two or more slices of bread. Not a roll, not a wrap, not a leaf of lettuce: sliced bread. What is inside far less than the container.

Consequently:

A hot dog is not a sandwich.
A burrito is not a sandwich.
A wrap is not a sandwich.
A cheeseburger on a roll is not a sandwich. Sliced bread only.
A lobster roll is not a sandwich.
A hoagie is not a sandwich.
An ice cream sandwich is not a sandwich.
A hot turkey sandwich is not a sandwich.
An open-faced sandwich is not a sandwich.
If you make a sandwich using one end of the bread and one proper slice, it’s kind of a sandwich still, but not really. See also folding over a single slice of bread for a half-sandwich.
If you make a sandwich using both ends of the bread, it is no longer a sandwich at all.
A peanut butter or grilled cheese sandwich is a sandwich.
A mayonnaise, butter, or ketchup sandwich is probably a sandwich — I’m not sure whether those fillings are solid enough — just not a very good one.
A sandwich made with crackers instead of bread is not a sandwich, but an imitation of a sandwich.
A sandwich made with crackers between two slices of bread is a sandwich, but not a very good one.

IMO, a sandwich is a type of food where bread is basically a deliver 'vehicle' for some sort of other type of food (meat, vegetables, etc...)

is a taco or a gyro a sandwich then?

Disagree. The end of a piece of bread is still a slice of that loaf of bread. A roll has to be sliced to accommodate a cheeseburger. Same with a hot dog. The degree of a cut of bread doesn't seem like it should be the linchpin on whether something is a sandwich or not.

They are essentially that culture's version of a sandwich.

I am enjoying this thread far more than I was expecting to

Anyway, I feel like I should take a stab at my own definition of a sandwich:

A sandwich is any solid or semi-solid filling (I like that part of Mr. Carmody's definition) between leavened bread such that it may be eaten by hand and the final preparation must leave at least some portion of the filling visually exposed.

Does that mean a sliced Monte Cristo is a sandwich but an unsliced Monte Cristo is not? Yes, yes it does.

I thought about a formulation that included "...the final preparation, sans slicing, must leave..."

But I enjoyed the absurdity of the slicing bit more. Also, it hurt my feelings to have the vaunted Monte Cristo barred from sandwichhood. With that said, I reserve the right to come to my senses at a later date

When we ran out of buns, my dad used to take 2 hot dogs cut in half and use 2 pieces of white bread.

So, what is that? Hot dog sandwich?

(Why he didn't just fold one piece in half like I do now is a mystery upon itself.

Your chart/image begs the question: What is the difference in a wrap and a burrito?

I don't know why, but I love this thread.

I would not consider a hot dog a sandwich, just on practical use of the term. If I said name me 10 sandwiches, I would be willing to bet nobody in a 10 person panel would say hot dog.

Your link goes too far, though. I would consider a sandwich made of the two end pieces still a sandwich, as I would a hot turkey and a hoagie or poboy.
