But Kate Beckinsale is hot.
All you really need to know about Michael Bay:

Q: What made you choose Kate Beckinsale?
A: I didn't want someone who was too beautiful. Women feel disturbed when they see someone's too pretty.

So instead of a 10/10, Bay got a 9.7/10?

I know this entire website thinks Kate Beckinsale is the greatest female alive but no she isn't classically beautiful, she's "hot". Maybe it's because I was in high school when it came out but I liked the movie Yes it was corny but the actual attack and the Doolittle Raid were incredibly done, The acting was spotty but I thought Affleck was fantastic in the scene where Danny dies. You now with Bay you're going to get some cheesy impossible crap but when compared to some of his other movies I think Pearl Harbor is pretty good.

Uh huh. Sure.
That's why Scorsese cast her as Ava Gardner. Because she's not classically beautiful.

Harnett's declaration that World War II has just started was also laughable.

Pearl Harbor sucks...just a little more than I miss...you.

Don't know why people always shite on Bay. He didn't write the script (paraphrase)
People shite on Bay so much because it's very well known that the script writers craft the movie around the glorious action scenes that he dreams away about at night.
"I saw these guys Para - gliding on the discovery channel last night, we need a scene in the transformers movie where soldiers are doing that BUT thru and around buildings and shite"
Then the writers have to come up with a story to make that happen and often times it is shite. The very first scene from transformers (2007) was exactly this. Awesome action scene that made no fricking sense in the movie.

It is a war movie you can watch with your kids, especially if you skip over the romantic stuff.

I was also 10 when the movie came out. I desperately needed to go to the bathroom, but I didn't want to miss the attack. I assumed that it would start at any moment. I waited for so long, finally caved, then went to the bathroom. When I got back, the attack still hadn't started.
I can't remember for sure how I felt, but I think I left the movie disappointed.

"Why does Michael Bay get to keep on making movies?"

Pearl Harbor's #1 problem is that the script is a piece a shite, which I'm not sure why Bay always gets the blame for since he didn't write the damn thing.
He may not have written the screenplay, but his was a major influence over it. Randall Wallace is credited as the sole screenwriter of Pearl Harbor. This is the same guy who wrote Braveheart and We Were Soldiers. Compare the writing in those two films with the writing in Pearl Harbor. You will quickly notice stark differences.

While the attack on the ships was pretty well done, the air combat scenes were a joke. P-40s did not do well at all vs Zero's on the deck. The planes shot down by USAAC P-40s were Kate torpedo bombers that were jumped by Welch and Taylor. Add to it the way they portrayed the pilots in the cockpit jerking the sticks around were actually comically bad,

I was young but I remember cringing when I heard that. Totally anachronistic.

It sucked so bad.
Another WWII movie that sucked beyond all measure? Windtalkers. I nearly walked out of the theater on that one.

Just watch it to get a feel for the attack
So, watch about 3 minutes of it?

It was ridiculous to try and make it like Titanic. That love triangle was cringe worthy The action scenes are pretty cool though.

Even as a teenager watching this in theaters, I cringed hard at a lot of those lines. Including my favorite exchange in the film:
"Crack shooting, Danny!"
"Crack shooting, Rafe!"
"Land of the free!"
"Home of the brave!"

"Home of the brave!"
