I dont know much about boats, but how much would it cost to replace a 150hp Mercury?

as the others say, the long standing rule of thumb is $100 per horsepower.

Is there much in labor work once an outboard is bought?
Just running some fuel lines, etc?

Depends on if a 2 stroke or 4 stroke. 2.4l 2.5l old school 2 strokes are cheap to replace.

not a whole lot, as long as everything existing is in good shape. basically just setting it in place with a hoist, tightening a few mounting screws, connecting and adjusting steering linkage, and connecting fuel line and power cables.

The price of outboards has always blown my mind. You can replace a 4 cylinder car engine for a couple grand, a 4 cylinder outboard can easily cost 10 just for the motor to show up in a box.

Get a 4 stroke

I paid 24k for my F300 Yamaha, so that rule doesn't apply on all.

Subtle brag is subtle.
That motor cost more than my boat, outboard, Ipilot, and trailer package by a good bit.

IIRC my dad paid $14k for his 4cyl Yamaha 200hp the year it first came out.
Then again, he buys a new motor every 3 years or so, and uses the same dealer.

The Mercury 150 FourStoke sells for about $10k. If it's a simple replacement, you're looking at about 3 hours of labor and possibly a wiring harness adapter. If you're looking to replace the rigging, more time and parts will be required and is application dependent.

David wade is correct. But don't be surprised to see that number creep up quickly with taxes and if you need a new control box, cables, harness, prop, etc. the motor literally comes with just the motor.

Maybe its just me, but if I wanted to know the price of something I would call or visit someone who sells the product.

You and me both. I would like to know why.

Because it's associated with a boat and anything associated with a boat is expensive as hell
I bet the manufacturer makes 50% profit on an outboard
But whatcha gonna do about it?

This is so true but the price to play hasn't scared me away yet.

Your only options are pay it or don't have a boat. Not having a boat sucks worse than not having money.
