It is an expensive proposal to build substantial enough flood barriers for New Orleans, and increasingly so with wetland losses (more a consideration for the south and east portions).

The deficiencies were all about saving money. That was excellent fiscal decision making, seeing how cheap the Katrina recovery effort turned out to be.

They didn't blow the levees in 2005, but they did do it decades ago, which was planned and public knowledge. That ended miserably as well.

ETA: thanks bricks, forgot the year

What those conspiracy theorist conveniently forget to add is that where they blew it up in 1927 fricked white people, not black.

Well I know this will come off crazy but my powpow was well connected in government back in 65. They blew them levees back then to alleviate flooding up river. Not even being sarcastic.

Eta; in no way am I agreeing they did this for Katrina

half arse walls along the canal was a good idea. Not to mention the shoddy construction and maintenance

The wall design was and still is for much of the city was sheet pile with a concrete cap. How anyone thought that this was a good idea is beyond me. The new wall design included 65 ft I-beam piles and a 60 ft long pile cap. The new walls aren't going anywhere. Not to worry though. There are still miles of the flimsy, shabby, poorly designed sheet pile walls left to fail at some future date.

Well the good thing is at least at the major canals they have the pump stations to block lake water from flowing freely into the canals.
I feel pretty confident that the new protections in place would protect Nola from another Katrina. At least above the industrial canal anyway.

When people believe their story of victimhood, they will create any narrative to blame others for their misfortune.

The Katrina myth probably has much of its origins from the government purposely blowing up levees in rural and poor areas in 1927 to save the rest of New Orleans.
quote:

When the river finally rose at New Orleans, there was seepage at some points along the city’s levee system. There was severe street flooding in New Orleans in mid-April, but that was the result of heavy rain and a short-circuit at a drainage plant, not because of the calamity brewing upriver. On April 29, authorities took a drastic step. To relieve the threat of a levee break at New Orleans, engineers dynamited one at Caernarvon, sending floodwaters sweeping across lower St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes and forcing about 10,000 people from their homes.

I know the difference between driven and ridden douche. I meant driven. It's baffling you can't grasp how the sentence with driven differs from the one ending in ridden. Go play in the French Quarter at night.

Katrina was NOT a setup by the gov't. The people in gov't are not smart enough to think that far in advance.
The Army corps of engineers built the levees, but did not build some of them well enough. Those levees failed. That is the only gov't association with the levees.
