For the first time in my life, I think I was called out for my white privilege

I'm literally shaking.

I stopped to get gas this morning and decided I would go in, grab some coffee and a sausage biscuit. This is a semi-normal occurrence for me, as this particular gas station has good sausage biscuits and is on my way to work.

I walked in, grabbed my biscuit and coffee and went to pay. $3.88. I swiped my card, and when the screen said processing, I said "thank you" and turned and walked away.

The woman at the counter went berserk. "DONT YOU WALK AWAY BEFORE ITS APPROVED." At this point, the card was approved. Then she said "YOU WHITE FOLK DONT KNOW HOW IT FEELS TO BE WORRIED IF YOUR CARD IS GOING TO GET DECLINED."

I said Thank you again and walked out. I'm not sure, but I think I got called out for my white privilege.

I don't know how it feels,

because I keep track of what is on my card and its limits.

But anyone of any race can do that using basic math.

I got called out for my privilege for the first time about two weeks ago. I told someone they should move if they dont like where they are living.

I hope it was just her way of being funny and not serious.

Intelligently people shouldn't have to worry about such things.

This isn't 1980. You can know your balance at any given moment in time.

Short of a problem with the card, there should never be any reason to be "worried if your card will be declined".

Basically, she admitted she's stupid.

You know, I'm not sure. I stop in at this place twice a week on average. Ive seen her dozens of times and Ive done this before without occurrence. Maybe she was joking and I did not get called out for my white privilege.

Tell her you don't work at Micky Ds and use EBT, you don't have to worry.

Why are you shaking? This is just part of what being white in America is like. I thought this was just the everyday norm? Don't worry, you get use to it after a while.

I dunno.

One of my guilty pleasures is watching black people in front of me on the rare occasion I actually use an ATM.

Without fail, they have to check their balance.

And, WAY more commonly than should be the case, they are surprised and unhappy about it.

i'd find the number for the owner of gas station and complain. she doesn't need to be talking to customers like that. the only words our of her mouth should be "thank you". even for a gas station attendant that was unprofessional.

You should contact the manager and tell him/her/it that if the worker isn't fired then you will never do business with them again and you will tell all your white friends not to do business with them again.

This BS should be confronted and stopped in its tracks!

Did you tell the cashier " It's not because I'm white,it's because I learned math in school...so I know how much money I have. Everybody should try it."

Use cash next time. I'd like to hear her response to that. Tell her she made you feel guilty about your white privilege the last time you were in. She what she says. That will tell you if she was serious with her remark today.

I disagree, I think you should forgot about it as soon as you hit the door. You shouldn't let someone ruined your day for just telling you their opinion. I'm sure if there were other black people in the store and heard that, they were probably embarrassed for her.
