Geez. What's your problem?
It's called good manners.

Nope. When he was not cursing he was railing about global warming.
Which my wife and I both found hilarious.
Ok...so it's just the cursing.
I'll ask again, and if you're not interested in explaining it, or don't really have an answer beyond "Because" then I wish you'd just say so and I'll move along. You keep avoiding this particular portion of my questions while answering other parts.
But...I'm asking civilly because I'm genuinely curious and I'd like to give you the opportunity to EXPLAIN your position more fully. I'm suggesting that there are many people like you who seem to get upset by word usage but seem to have far less of a problem with their stand-ins...meaning that it's not WHAT the words represent, but thew words THEMSELVES, which makes no sense at all to me.
I care about word meanings, not words. Turning a "bad" word into a pre-school version of the same word and meaning does not alleviate the person from saying a word with the same meaning. Telling someone to "eat shite" is no worse, in my mind, then telling them to "eat poo poo." You're suggesting someone ingest feces, regardless of whether or not you use a swear to do so, right? Clearly some people thin the swear is worse...why???
So...one final time...what is it about words themselves illicit this reaction when it seems that words with the same meaning that are NOT considered swears do not illicit?

Assaulting someone because they used a bad word in front of you is considered good manners?
What ever happened to sticks and stones...?
I agree using adult language in a mixed crowd (a crowd you're not familiar with) is poor form because you're potentially going to get this reaction, but the one responsible for the reaction is the one reacting, after all. One person is simply using words...the other is deciding to escalate to violence to prevent words from being spoken.
You want to use your OWN words to let them know you don;t like the way they're speaking? Sure! That's how we do things! The minute you decide to hit someone or threaten them to stop talking in a way you don;t like, then you've crossed the line.
We see it all the time in regard to politics, from both sides. Some assclown wants to burn a flag? frick that...go kick his arse and stop him! Some visiting professor or writer wants to talk on campus and we don't like it? frick that...go kick his arse and prevent him from speaking! Ridiculous.
Words...just words, folks.

Actually, for the uninformed cursing is not a moral violation. A violation of social convention in some setyings? Yes. Not a moral violation howevet. The English language has one of the most colorful venaculars. It is used without regard to social class or educational level. I have heard just as many of my faculty Ph.D. colleagues curse as I have anyone else. Normally it us considered inappropriate ti curse around young children. However, at some point between late adolescence and young adulthood the prohibition goes away. That saud, I think we all know when and when not. However. The language itself does not bother me at all

It's usually uncouth poor people, or people who were raised poor or by one parent, who speak this way. I'd say 75% of this forum fall into one of those categories. It's these people who already feel that they don't belong so they try to be edgy.

I agree. It's all just language. Profanity has its place as a tool of expression. I remember one of the last conversations that I had with my father before he got sick was the versatility of the word "frick." Sometimes it's just the perfect word and used correctly it is very effective expression. A person just has to know when to use it and be aware of social norms and environment.

The above post shows the lack of class in current society.
There are times and places for everything. Knowing when it's socially acceptable to say various things seems to be a lost art.

Ah, but which authority defines what is socially acceptable? The problem seems more that the culture has changed and that it's you who struggles to know when it's acceptable to use colorful language.
Reality is that the vast majority of us live that bourgeoisie lifestyle

It hasn't changed. Most people still realize it's inappropriate to use certain language in certain settings. I have no particular struggle in this area, but you apparently do.
It has nothing to do with Puritanism, that's your bias. It's recognizing your audience

Les Miles: I thought we had a fricking timeout left?

Not at all. It's pretty much acceptable everywhere except maybe in front of religious parents or something.
If a groom laughs and tells his bride that she is fricking beautiful.. 99% of people will think it's sweet and take no issue of it.

If you'd been paying attention I said it offended my wife.
If someone had used better language to say the same thing, doubt it would have bothered her, might not even have noticed in a crowded area.
But since it was bothering her, I took steps.
