The program was stupid from the start, but if the government offered it at the time and people had applications in process, they should be able to follow through.
This is exactly it

Obama promised a lot of shite, Sweetie. You're just going to have to deal with his lies like the rest of us.

I wouldn't go that far. My problem is the ability to take out huge loans without the intention of paying it back. Didn't they (lenders) learn anything from the housing crisis?

i went to film school, but worked through it. couldn't believe there were as many people also in film school taking out student loans for a liberal arts degree they'd never make money with.

stupid count aside, it is law that there is a debt forgiveness program. people have joined it and been on it for years now. changing the law =/= Obama lying. This is an instance in which he didn't lie; he simply enacted a terrible law.
Overturning this law (which must be done) but then not honoring those who have been part of the program would be the same as raising social security age to 75 and telling everyone who is on it between 66-74 that they no longer qualify. You simply can't do that.

Isn't that exactly what they did in 2012?

For clarity, this is Obama's For Profit college forgiveness program, not the Bush "work for the government/non-profit" one.

Danielle Ramos' student-debt nightmare was supposed to be over. Like thousands of others who studied at failed for-profit colleges, she was promised by the U.S. Education Department under President Barack Obama that her federal loans would be forgiven by now. But as the weeks tick by with no reprieve, the 30-year-old college student fears the financial burden will force and her 4-year-old son to move back with her parents. "I'm a single mom, so that's really scary,"
This is what happens when the government distorts the market with easily accessible money. College has become "big business " and the government fed the student loan bubble. When this bubble bursts it ain't gonna be pretty.

DeVos drew a new round of criticism from borrower advocates when she announced plans to rewrite Obama-era rules that were meant to streamline the complex path toward loan forgiveness.
This woman has no clue how to handle this.

That's not accurate. I was born in early 1970s. My parents were part of the Silent Generation(between Greatest and Boomers). Same for my friends.
Maybe half X half millenials from boomers. When was the big spike in births? Early, Mid fifties?

You're correct. She should just tell them to pay their debts.

Yep they learned to loan out as much money as possible and when it fails the government will bail them out.

Oh but the government can.
Everyone should understand that government guarantees, guarantee nothing.
Any program can be dismantled in a single election. This is why it is silly to count on multi-generational programs that depend on people who don't even exist yet.
We don't have a clue what conditions people 2 generations from now will be dealing with and we certainly don't know if they will share the same values.
They may well look around and say, "we aren't paying for tthe shite you old people voted for yourselves 100 years aago, go frick yourselves."

One of our children attended a for profit and if I knew what I have since learned his shadow would have never fallen upon that campus. The irony, the Department of Ed knew how poor this school was but failed to notify folks like me who could have had the opportunity to make an informed decision.
We are not a family of uneducated, slackers. His loans no longer exist as they were paid off. He has served his country in the military and continues to serve as a civilian.
Hold me responsible, fine, but hold predatory for profits for their share of the responsibility. They aren't just cheating me but you likewise as you are also paying the freight!!!
