Seems like this occupation is brought up a lot on here so I thought I'd post an article from Medreps:

How'd you end up getting into this Okie? Is there some kind of special degree/skills/certification requirement or is mostly just sales and a "personality" fit?

The average salary for a Pharmaceuticals Sales Representative is $68,173. Salaries estimates based on 39 salaries submitted anonymously to Glassdoor by Pharmaceuticals Sales Representative employees in Louisiana.May 4, 2017

Ive only ever interacted with a few pharma sales reps in my field.

I do meet a lot of the med device reps. Most of them are nice, a few are overbearing in trying to get into the OR to talk to us.

At least in my region for my field, mostly male though there's a couple of females.

From a resident perspective, some of them are my age and I have hung out socially with them(non business) or sometimes quasi-socially for free beers/food on the company dime.

I've been in medical device sales for 6 years. and no, most people I know in this industry aren't fired at a drop of a hat. Unless they sell products where reimbursement changes each year. But they expect that and are well compensated for that risk.

As everyone has said medical device reps make a lot more money than pharma reps because we have way more specialized roles.

We have to be in surgery with the doctors and consult on our equipment when the shite hits the fan.

I wouldn't say we all have addictive personalities but most of the good reps are extremely obsessive.

Spine is very lucrative for reps. Every Rep is willing to bend over backwards for us to use their hardware. They all are very knowledgeable and I respect what they do but Tough field having to kiss arse your whole career.

Device reps have a much tougher job than pharma reps.

They need to have a very good understanding of anatomy, physiology, and the ins and outs of their product. Many times they are basically talking the surgeon through a new device in the OR. I have had some bad trauma cases where a knowledgeable rep has really come in handy.

I'm a synthes fan personally.

BTW, for those in the medical-device industry I'm sure most are aware of the Cafepharma board.. There are generally some pretty good discussions (and lots of crap) from industry insiders and medical-device employees discussing the merits of various companies and product lines. Also, there is an industry gossip section so if want to know which rep is sleeping with their regional manager or an OR nurse it's your go-to! Sadly, I know a few who were mentioned prominently on there but thankfully I've kept my nose clean.

It's a statistic driven industry. Those who get the doctors to write their Rx get the pay, those who don't get the boot.
