I admit I'm a Donna fan, but I also admit it was the right call to let her go. She had a good run, but she was shitting the bed near the end...
Been on alot of long car rides for work this week, and I've gotten reacquainted with some of the Europe '72 shows. Listened to 4/16/72 yesterday, great stuff....starts off solid but somewhat restrained, but by the time they get to China>Rider, it's pretty much off to the races for the rest of the show, lol

I was listening to a late 72 in my office the other day. Someone came in right at that moment of Donna sounding like a slaughtered cow. They gave me a funny look. I started to explain but realized I couldn't.

If Donna would have only gone for a bathroom trip during Playing in the Band she wouldn't have near the reputation with Deadheads she has. She could actually sound really good on harmonies and when they had the sound mixed right. A lot of times she couldn't hear herself on the monitors which would result in Shriekfest. IMO the best versions of The Music Never Stopped, Comes a Time, Samson & Delilah, and He's Gone to name a few were all in the Donna era.
5/9/77 is my all time fave. That's not a typo. I'll take it over Cornell any day of the week.
Set 1
Help on the Way
Slipknot
Franklin's Tower
Cassidy
Brown-Eyed Women
Mexicali Blues
Tennessee Jed
Big River
Peggy-O
Sunrise
The Music Never Stopped
Set 2
Bertha
Good Lovin
Ship of Fools
Estimated Prophet
The Other One
Drums
Not Fade Away
Comes a Time
Sugar Magnolia
Encore
Uncle John's Band
Favorite ever versions of The Music Never Stopped, Ship of Fools, and Comes a Time(no other version even close on this one) Top five versions of Help/Slipknot/Franklin's, Brown Eyed Women, Tennessee Jed, Big River, Peggy-O, Sugar Magnolia, and Uncle John's Band. Only complaint I would have would be the outrageously long (even by Dead standards) gaps between songs in the first set for tunings but that's nit picky of me.

There's an epic fail by Donna on "Deal" at Red Rocks '78, but for some reason I think it's an awesome moment, lol...the chorus kept building up at the end per usual, and right when the band was seemingly gonna wrap up the song, Donna forced another go-around and tried building things up another notch. Only problem was, nothing but off-key shrieks came out of her mouth, lol...but since she actually succeeded at raising the overall intensity level, I loved her for doing it

Just sold out too. Glad I got my ticket. I don't think there is any supporting act. Hoping for some really long sets from JRAD.
All the Phish fan boys are hoping Trey makes an appearance since they are playing Dicks this weekend.

I don't get the Donna love at all. I am a new dead fan after seeing Dead & Company in Boulder this summer. Does anybody know when the last time was that GD played in NOLA? I'm seeing rumors of a late Nov and december string of shows with a possible southern city as one of the shows. Also MSG and Vegas.

Joe Russo's Almost Dead plays in the NOLA area a bunch I believe.
Check them out.
There's always regional bands playing the Dead's catalog of music too.

pretty sure they've only been to Louisiana 6 times (4 in NO), as 1970 left a bad taste in their mouth
1969 (9/1) - Prairieville: NO Pop Festival @ International Speedway
1970 (1/30 ~2/1) - NOLA: Grand Opening at The Warehouse with Fleetwood Mac ... busted in French Qtr on 1/31
1977 (10/16) - BR: LSU Assembly Center
1980 (10/18-19) - NOLA: Saenger
1982 (9/9) - NOLA: Saenger
1988 (10/18) - NOLA: UNO Lakefront Arena
RATDOG played NOLA a bunch from 1996-2003. Most shows were at the HOB.
Bob Weir was recently here in April on the Campfire Tour (Saenger)
The 1980 Saenger shows were amazing (3 sets with an acoustic opener),
perhaps a payback since the band hadn't been to the Crescent City in 12 years

It's a shame the Betty Boards seems to end around 1979 as the 1980 Saenger shows are solid.
After Ramrod (Betty's husband) died in 1976, she was slowly phased out of the GD family and inner circle.

That first show looks damn good. So does the second.

betty actually had a brief relationship with brent in the early 80's, and when they broke up is when betty kind of got kicked to the curb
