Trolling Motor Issues...

The last trip out on the boat, I was using my trolling motor (112lb thrust 36volt Minn Kota Ripe Tide). All of a sudden the motor stopped working. I ended up finding this circuit breaker (the one in the image) had tripped. I reset the breaker and the trolling motor work again, only to trip again for the second time. I didn't get to mess around with it anymore due to the fact that we had to run from the weather, and now I'm offshore. Just curious is anyone has had this issue before. I don't think is has anything to do with it but, both live wells were running and the GPS was on. And prior to having the trim tabs installed I never had this issue.... If for some reason the picture of the breaker doesn't show up, it has in writing (SHORTSTOP 24VDC XO2 50A).

I have a 36 volt riptide and my breaker will trip occasionally. It normally happens when I am running at high speed for a lengthy amount of time and in warmer temperatures. When I replaced my batteries about a year and a half ago, I replaced the breaker, but it will still trip occasionally. IMHO its a safeguard and doing its job when it trips.

Well for one that breaker isnt rated for 36v

Obviously, check to make sure your connections are good and there is no short in the wiring. Also, test all 3 of your batteries for internal shorts. If that is all good then you may want to upgrade to a 60A that is compatible with a 36VDC system. Minn Kota makes one that can be found for around 30 bucks online. MKR-19 circuit breaker
On a side note, does it matter that a 24VDC rated breaker is in a 36VDC system???

Minn Kota rigging chart
This minn Kota rigging chart link says your trolling motor should have a 60 amp breaker. I was having a very similar issue with my 80lb ulterra it would pop the 50 if the wind was blowing really hard and it was on anchor. Before I swapped it, it was doing it more and more often. I bought one of these
ETA: Theriot was a little quicker than me!

The MKR-19 appears to be a definite improvement over the breaker that I currently have. I'll be swapping mine out next time I head to the camp. Thanks for the tip.

The one you have in the picture fell apart under my front deck in a few months.
I replaced it with the one suggested and no problems for a few years.

I can say that it only tripped when I was running it wide open and for a decent amount of time. I did see that Minn Kota 60A breaker, and when I get it from offshore I will install it. Thanks for the quick responses.

Pull the prop and make sure you don't have any fishing line on the shaft....I upgraded mine to a better circuit breaker style after having issues with the smaller box circuit like yours. I would check the shaft for line and upgrade to a better circuit breaker....

quote:that 112 will pull up to 52 amps. Check out the link to MK rigging chart. May be nothing wrong and that breaker is performing as designed. That should make you feel better.
running it wide open
I have a 70 lb MK (max Amp of 42) with a cheap 40A breaker and have occasionally tripped it running wide open for a few minutes.
