Forgive me.... I'm not from BR. I thought everyone was joking when they called her this.

What is a mayor - President? I've never heard of such a thing. I just read it in her letter to Chief Dabadie

I think it refers to the system of government under which the mayor operates, specifically with regard to the city council.

It's like putting Esq. on the back of your name. It's an indicator of a worthless achievement, held by most people who can correctly fill in their names on a standardized test scantron.

Perhaps it has a police jury system then? That's the other common system of parish government in the state.

One of the biggest good ole baw rackets in the state. I've yet to deal with one that's not corrupt.

Well my friend, in case you don't know the police jury system is inherited largely from the French that once governed our great state. In the 1970s and 80s there was a statewide push to reform and modernize parish governments and many parishes adopted the mayor president system. Others retained the police jury system because it suited them better. Vernon Parish is an example of a parish that kept the police jury. Neither is necessarily better or worse, its just about what suits a given population.

A valid point for certain and it was the endemic corruption that helped spur calls for reform.

I'm guessing it's like hyphenated last names...

Not my Parish-President.

ETA: I moved away from BR in Nov and I'm more thankful for that with every mention of Sharon Weston Broome.
