Niners were stout too, Saints fans forget that.
That defense could mash. I can still hear the hit Pierre Thomas took. But Alex Effin Smith.........
Everyone just assumed that GB was going to steamroll everyone in the playoffs and going to Lambeau in the winter probably wasn't going to work out for the Saints. But low and behold, Giants knock them off and the NFCCG would have been in nola if they could have held on. Saints took the Giants to the woodshed in the dome earlier that year, so although a victory wasn't necessarily guaranteed, saints fans feel pretty confident they would have to made it back to the Super Bowl...............HAD WE JUST HELD ON!!!

There was not a single year where those Niners teams were considered the best team in the NFL or even an overwhelming favorite to win their conference title going into the playoffs like the 01 Rams, 98 Vikings, 1990 Bills, etc

They had top defenses with a serviceable QB, pretty much the Ravens for the longest time.

2011 Saints
1998 Vikings
1990 Bills

2011 Green Bay would be up there with 2011 New Orleans

Preseason best team?
The Pats and Broncos dominated the 2012 regular season. You could make a case for them being NFC favorites going into the 2012 postseason

Vernon was a gamer. Blitzing Smith and leaving Harper to cover Davis resulted in a bad time.

2001 Rams? That team was loaded and got Belichick'd. I think Dick Vermeil gets number 2. Martz is an idiot.
