What are the chances of getting an LHSAA hardship waiver to play baseball at another high school if your school (Baton Rouge High) doesn't have a baseball team? Can you apply to play at a private school that you previously attended? Would you have to apply to play at the public high school that you would normally attend?

I'm on my phone so I can't really reply in full, but leaving a school because they dont have baseball is not considered a hardship.

A hardship would fall more under the one of relocating because of an abusive parent, or situations at the current school make it impossible to remain there safely.

Anything involving transferring due to sports is going to be turned down.

Now, there are several ways a kid could be immediately eligible.

If he is moving from baton rouge high to private school then he will most likely have to sit out.

If it is his assigned school, or in the same district and the principals both sign off on it then maybe.

If you move out of the school district and change to that school then you would be free to play right away.

Bout 19 years ago I had to move out of the district because I wanted to play basketball at another school in the same district. Wasn't the only reason for leaving but my dad got an apartment in the new district as our primary address. Never had to sit out

Need more info. Just one example, depending on why there is no baseball at the school he attends.

quote:

2. School Closure: In the event a member school closes, discontinues all interscholastic athletic competition, or is suspended from membership in the LHSAA, all students who have been in attendance at the member school for at least the preceding calendar year, shall be eligible at a member school of their choice in the same athletic attendance zone of the school closing or discontinuing athletic competition. If the school closing or discontinuing athletic competition is located outside a student’s athletic attendance zone, the student shall be immediately eligible at the school he/she first attends in his/her athletic attendance zone provided he/she has never attended a member school in that zone. In the latter case, if he/she has attended a member school in his/her athletic attendance zone, he/she shall be immediately eligible only at the member school he/she had first attended in his/her athletic attendance zone. When a school is closed and legally merges with another member school, all students who have been in attendance at the school that closes for at least one calendar year shall be immediately eligible at the latter school.

I highly doubt either the LHSAA or BRHS would allow this. Even if they did there is no way your son could physically be at practice anyway. BRHS ends at 3:30 while most other high schools end at 2:30.

Practice would start right after school (2:30) but your son would still be in his last class at BRHS. There are 100 other logistical issues as well.

Pretty sure if you go from public to private you're eligible right away

In many cases you can transfer from one school to another when the current school does not offer a sport or class.
This is the wrong place to ask though

Your first call should probably be to the AD and principal of the school that your son would be playing at to get their opinion. The LHSAA is a principals organization so all requests to them must come from a principal. We won an appeal last year which allowed my son to play baseball and it was not easy. We made a request and his eligibility was denied , we appealed and that was denied and we then requested a hardship hearing. The hearing is just that you show up at LHSAA and are sworn in you state your case to a panel of principals they ask questions and then vote , majority wins and it's finished. Good luck
