You boys fell for bait.
Lee was an upstanding gentleman. Defended his home. Lost. And prayed for peace and understanding afterwards.
The man lost as a rebel but redeemed himself as a leader of post war Virginia.
Honestly, if Bobby Lee was alive today as a leader of society he would tell you to calm your hate, love and defend your country, and respect your fellow man.
And be a gentleman at all times

Well said. But Lee would also tell us to never cave or discard our convictions. We can have a discussion without hatred, you know?

Sounds like some stuff this guy would preach

Lee all but wanted to disappear after the war. You can't have proper discussion when the deck is stacked against you.
They practically begged him to take over what is now Washington and Lee.
The man had more pride than you could ever know. He knew what the "southern cause" was and also understood that in defeat you lose with honor.
It's the same core value that ex presidents use to have.. It's the values Americans use to have.. you won , or you lost, but you respect the winner.. maybe not by choice.. but because you have been beaten. You had your chance to fight..
Racism and slavery are an old man's tale. If you truly hate a race, or a sex, or religion, them you are lost.
But if you hate stupid, or disrespect, or spite, or laziness... then we can talk

He saw it wrong. He was offered command of the Union Army at Blair House and instead chose to resign from that army and lead the other side.
Even though he was against secession.
He was a man of honorable intentions, but he messed this up.

Lee was not a federalist. His dilemma was his loyalty to Virginia and unwillingness to fight against his own family even if it meant giving up all he strived for in life. In that regard, I feel he saw it right. To your point, Virginia may have saw it wrong, but not Lee.

Agree to disagree, but very reasonable, thoughtful post. Which is why it seems out of place here.

Seems logical Stalin. Just silence opposing views.

The lack of knowledge in this thread of Robert E. Lee by the Mitch apologists is astounding. Ignorance or just a kool-aid drinker?
You want to compare Lee to Mitch, did Lee keep a black woman as a concubine and father an illegitimate child with her? Now, Mitch on the other hand ...

Who is a better man
My stomach is in knots that you would dare compare the two.
You tell me.
quote:
The forbearing use of power does not only form a touchstone, but the manner in which an individual enjoys certain advantages over others is a test of a true gentleman.
The power which the strong have over the weak, the employer over the employed, the educated over the unlettered, the experienced over the confiding, even the clever over the silly--the forbearing or inoffensive use of all this power or authority, or a total abstinence from it when the case admits it, will show the gentleman in a plain light
The gentleman does not needlessly and unnecessarily remind an offender of a wrong he may have committed against him. He cannot only forgive, he can forget; and he strives for that nobleness of self and mildness of character which impart sufficient strength to let the past be but the past. A true man of honor feels humbled himself when he cannot help humbling others.

Lee was the better man, but Mitch has the power to enact his ridiculous ideals. The statue erected in 1884 is a public nuisance in 2017
Good one Mitch. Well played

I don't think it would be possible to insult Lee any more than to compare him to the fricking pissant mayor.
Lee was/is viewed as an all time great general and human being by both sides of the conflict. He was descended from other great patriots.
Mitch is a retarded piece of shite descended from corrupt, vile politicians. All he has done for the city is raise taxes, stoke the racial fire, and preside of a dramatic increase in murder and violent crime.
While I am certainly unhappy with the removal of the other monuments, it makes me physically ill to think about Lee coming down. It has nothing to do with insulting the confederacy or my ancestors who fought it in. It has to do with a disgusting, despicable human being like Mitch being able to take down one of the greatest gentlemen of all time.
No one here has ever had to make decisions even remotely close to what Lee faced at the outbreak of the war.

The ignorance of those who argue so vehemently what they were taught at the victors trough!
REVENUE - Lncoln, I must have my revenue - over 70% by some expert estimates of total Fderal revenue was tariffs collected at ports in the South. A Massachusetts newspaper at the time said the Southerners could leave but they must leave thier property. Frederick Douglas the most prominent Black of the time said "He [Lincoln] was ready and willing at any time . . . to deny, postpone, and sacrifice the rights of humanity in the colored people to promote the welfare of the white people of his country.”
Only 5% of people in the south ownded slaved but over 1 million southern boys fought - you say to keep an institute that was of no benefit to them? The governors of Ohio and Illinois were asked about taking in freed slaves and refused absolutely.
For the "informed progressive", the Corwin Amendment was offered by an Ohio congressman to legalize slavery in both north and sout, tariffs and ever increasing federal government power were the issues, Lincoln's own writings showed no concern for blacks including discussions of repatriation to Africa. New York and Mass openly talked of secession in the early 1800s, we are told you can't secede but the southern states had to be readmitted following the war - why? The emancipation proclamation only applied to southern states "in rebellion", Northern and non-rebellious states kept slaves some until the 13th amendment was ratified later in 1865 - why? Sherman stated his goal was to wipe out the South including women and children "total war". The war was about control - a fight that continues today.
