Explain the MLB blackout logic to me like I'm an idiot

I live in the Baton Rouge area, and I want to like the Astros, but since I never get to see them on TV, I can't get to know the roster and it's much harder to become a fan.
Which makes me less likely to drive to Houston on the weekend to watch them play in person.
So what is MLB's logic for blacking out Astros games in the Baton Rouge market? I have to be missing something here...

my guess is that the Astros have no stroke with MLB and never have. it's a loser franchise that's had one good period in it's 50+ yrs of existence.
but, you can drive to Houston and watch a game. hell, you can also drive to Atlanta and watch a game.

MLB blacks out all Astros and Rangers games in TX, OK, and LA. It's ridiculous. Reddit MLB streams or MLB.tv with a VPN will do you good.
Also, Root sports just started in market steaming so if you have a friend with a Directv log in you can watch the Stros

The blackout rules for many MLB teams are completely ridiculous. Anywhere around Memphis is in the blackout area for the Cardinals AND the Braves
It used to be especially asinine bc the Memphis area would only get braves regional games so if you were a Cardinals fan you were very much SOL (this was in the time before Internet streams)
Thankfully they have it fixed now where we get the regional broadcasts of the Cardinals and Braves but it's still in the blackout area for two teams that are 5 hours away

This pisses me off too! Makes zero sense. Never seen a sport try so hard to be unpopular

Why would you drive for five hours to see a baseball game anyway?

I hate when the yankees play the astros because it gets blacked out. I had to listen to the game last night on the radio through my at bat app. Im gonna try the reddit thing tonight.

I've never understood the blackout restrictions either. If I lived a block away from the ballpark, I could understand it, but I don't. I would gladly pay for an MLB.TV subscription but the Rangers games are blacked out thus resulting in me having to watch it from a shitty bootleg stream on reddit. MLB is essentially fricking themselves with their restrictions.

These cable companies pay pretty good sums of money to be the exclusive provider of games. Part of that exclusivity means anyone within the defined "viewing area" cannot watch those games unless they are a subscriber to whatever provider carries the games.
It's shitty and archaic but there have been some moves in the last few years that loosen the cable company stranglehold.
I can see within the next few years MLB.tv offering a higher cost package that includes in market games.
