If you're willing to look at non-DSLR cameras, I'm a big fan of cameras with 1-inch sensors. In that price range the Sony DSC RX100 II and III as well as the Panasonic DMC LX-10 come to mind (and the Panasonic DMC ZS-100 if you want more zoom range). Compact Enthusiast Zoom Cameras
