I'm not much of a fisheran so I don't know which direction to go here, but my dad retires this week and I wanted to get him a nice rod and reel. Nothing too fancy or expensive. He'll prob only use it bay fishing for trout and reds. He fishes out of Barataria Bay.
Any help very appreciated.

I've been very pleased with my Falcon rods.

3000 series shimano spinning reel. Pick the one in your price range.
Falcon makes a quality rod as does Castaway
Most of my spinning rods are Shimano
Last rod I purchased was a TFO. I like it a lot and it comes with a lifetime warranty.
If you got a local tackle dealer they will probably have a better selection of rods than Academy.

A nice bottle of whiskey, a good cigar, and a lap dance is what I am wishing for, and my son's know me well.
On a serious note it is hard to go wrong with a Penn Spinfisher, I would recommend a 3500, this will leave you enough money for the cigar and whiskey at least.

Second this. Dont get a gift card - there's something nice about opening a box to a shiny new reel, even if its not the one you would get yourself...so include a gift receipt.

i just gave my dad a calcutta ct100b...great for specks and reds. Falcons are good rods unless you really want to go all out and get him a gloomis

If you love him...
Shimano stradic 3000 (about $200)
St. Croix med fast rod, as much as you can spend 6.5' long. The more you spend, the better it will be.
Good luck, and congrats to dad.

for real. if it is his retirement gift , at least step up to St. Croix. Falcons are like great for the price but, man. the guy is retiring.

I know he used to have some baitcasters. I remember them well because it would always piss him off when I was younger and got the reel in so many birds nests lol. Spinning is prob best.
