They have a modem/router combo that I pay no fees for...$70/month for 1 gig up and down with no data cap

AT&T service price includes an all-in-one modem/router combo that AT&T calls a gateway. It's actually a decent router in its own right--2.4 & 5.0, etc. You can also put your own router behind it, and it will usually figure out its place in the world without issue. I install AT&T fiber for a living. AMA.
