BTW, y'all need to vote for Julie Stokes for Treasurer. She is a CPA, very conservative, and very smart.
No. No. Sweet Baby Jesus No. And I'm a CPA who's excited when other CPAs get involved in politics.
But No. She's, how do I say this nicely, a lightweight.
You know how in every graduating class, someone has to finish last, but they still get a diploma? There you go.

Moon Griffon and Co. have been saying that other states have been moving away from CAT tax, and yet our legislature is persuing it.
True Story. Isn't that interesting... we are so far behind the rest of the country that ideas that have already failed in other places are just starting to get "liked" here.
The idea that every business uses public resources, so should have to pay something, is an idea that makes some sense.
The annual report is $30 for a business registered in Louisiana. Just raise that to say $250 and be done with it.

Why do they need to propose cuts? Let's just leave the budget at a standstill.
Even at a standstill, you still have increases if you want to keep things the same. For example, more public school students due to natural student growth. So you have to allow for that, even if the per pupil rate stays the same.
Or, you freeze total spending as it is, and as new kids come into the system, they have to just absorb the cost. that's fine too... but that's, economically spending, is a cut.
Louisiana doesn't really use baseline budgeting, which is what the feds use. Here, a cut is really a cut... unlike the feds, where baseline budgeting means a cut is really still spending more, just not as much more.
And even with a standstill budget, you still have the temp sales taxes rolling off, which is going to mean either actual cuts or new revenues. That's a year away so technically it doesn't have to be handled this session, but it can't be handled in the next regular session either, so we would have to do a special.

The Governor is pursuing it, not the Legislature. And yes other states are moving away from it.

Edwards will whine to the media about doomsday scenarios before abandoning his goofy tax reform plan,

Legit interesting. She struck me as one who at least did her homework. Can you talk a little more about what you know of her, competence-wise?

Only one of those things is an entitlement.
You say that, but if it can't be politically eliminated then it becomes an entitlement, and right now that's what we have.
Watch no one is going to take away TOPS, the film credits or roll back the Medicaid Expansion even though it costs us vital tax dollars.

I'm no Edwards fan. But, at least he tries.. even if he is clueless. Jindal could not give a single solitary frick about the state and Louisiana is in the shitter because of it.

I don't want to say too much, because she is a very nice hard working individual. I also don't want to blow too much of my own cover.
She just doesn't seem to have much of a grasp of the concrete, complex issues. She had her own small practice and also served as the CFO for a small company. I would gladly let her do my own taxes and 90 percent of the state.
But in meetings / workshops where she has been there, it seems like she struggles with higher level concepts. At the sales tax modernization meetings... there were many times she looked out of her depth.
At the end of the day, she may well end up being the most qualified candidate, but that will be because the others are worse.
Don't just assume, oh, she's a CPA, she's perfect.

Agree.
Maybe compared to other CPAs she is a lightweight, but compared to other legislators she is Wile E. Coyote, Super Genius.

I am pretty sure this has been debunked. It's simply not true
Do you have a link for that? I would really like to educate myself on where that money currently goes. This is how I will base my vote.

I know a couple of people in the legislature who want her out so they don't have to deal with her and her antics, she's a pain in a$$ to deal with.
And the Treasurer in Louisiana doesn't do much, so there's not much that she can frick up.

Louisiana is just now OPENING its session?
No wonder you're last in everything. While you were sleeping in, Texas and Florida have long been at work (and we in Texas only do this every other year).

So I think she is excellent, but that said:
1. She is terrible at politics. That isn't necessarily a strike against her. I think she comes to a conclusion and then pushes for that result.
2. She is a touch scatterbrained. I don't think that so much reflects her intelligence though. As someone who occasionally does the same thing, I can sympathize.

I haven't seen it personally, but I've heard that especially in back rooms, she can be a bit of a diva.

They say cuts, and I agree in general... but what gets cut, exactly?
We have one of the smaller populations in the U.S yet have a government the size of Florida or Pennsylvania's. There is plenty to cut.
The tax burden in Louisiana isn't that outrageous relatively, it's just that we see almost no return on tax dollars. Roads are shite, schools are failing, police and state services are shite, etc.
