Is a magnetic oil drainplug worth the money?

2016 GM engine with around 16k. Worthwhile to add a magnetic plug next oil change or is the filter getting everything that could be damaging?

I don't think anything small enough to get through the filter would do damage to the engine. magnetic drain plugs are so inexpensive that it would be hard to argue that it doesn't make sense to put one on, though.
have to say, it may be kind of cool just to see what it catches, too.

How much is it?
Does it give you piece of mind for that price?

Not really worth the money but then they are so cheap it's not going to hurt anything either. Better off buying a good oil filter cutter to look at what the filter is catching. About the only place a magnetic drain plug is worth a damn is on the differential.

About $35.
Seems like it would be a worthwhile addition.

$35 for a plug? JB Weld a damned $0.10 neodymium disc to the one you've got.

You shouldn't need it on a late model engine. If you have metal in your oil, you will soon be replacing the engine.

Hum... never heard of this before. Off the cuff I'd assume the filter should catch anything that could be caught by the magnet; and I'd think that a magnet as small as the plug wouldn't be very effective.
However, could one attach a set of rare-earth magnets to the entire underside of the pan? That'd give a rather large surface area to collect material. But that's also give a large magnet to collect shite from the outside too.

So a piece of a mind comes with that price?

Buy a quality filter and change it regularly.
If you are overly concerned, get a Used Oil Analysis done by Blackstone Labs (or similar) for that peace of mind backed by actual science and results.

You left out the dash $3-5
My F150 came with a magnetic drain plug. There is barely enough stuff on the magnet to make a stain on a paper towel.

How would you know what the magnets collect? Whatever it is would remain inside of the pan.

you people still drive cars with oil?
jkjk, im blessed.

It'd do some good just by keeping it out of the oil pump suction.

Take off pan, look at other side.

My transmission pan has a magnet. You have to drop the pan to see it. It usually has collected some stuff.

Think they make magnetic sleeves that fit around the oil filter too. I'd rather do that than spend money on a plug. I have one of these cutters from Longacre Racing for my trucks.

I'd expect a magnet on the transmission to collect far more than one on an engine oil pan. The transmission doesn't continuously force its fluid through a filter and isn't changed nearly as often.
That's just my guess.

Now that's an idea I could get behind; however, if you told me it didn't do a damned thing more than a quality oil filter then I wouldn't be surprised.
