In Europe it's considered rude to hunt without a suppressor.
Bad example. Probably shouldn't bring up Euro gun laws when trying to make the US's more lax
Its fricking impossible to get a gun compared to the states.

Basically, the question I have, is what do people use them for besides to shoot at the range without ear protection?
Post pictures of them on Instagram
Really it's just one more accessory to add if you are into customizing guns. Plus they are pretty fun to shoot

You obviously haven't been around suppressed weapons before, champ.

You ever shoot a firearm before? Let me clue you in on some details you are ignorant of. If you look at that little chart or do some research for yourself, you'll notice that a supressor doesn't make a firearm completely hearing safe. Especially true within indoor firing ranges and outdoor ranges where the firing line is partitioned into lanes and has overhead construction to prevent a ND from leaving the range's impact area. In such ranges you actually need to wear ear plugs and muffs to attenuate the sound dB to safe levels. Suppressed firearms don't eliminate hearing protection but do make it easier not only the shooter but those around them. It's also better for surrounding communities as it lowers the noise pollution of a given range.

It's louder than that but doesn't have the same loud crack as a gun shot. Most people wouldn't even notice if you aren't familiar with the noise and heard one a few houses over
Everyone always says that same thing about non suppressed gunshots

I've shot a couple at a range but I'm far know an expert. I just was just commenting how the OP says she believes it completely silences guns and she doesn't say anything close to that

Technically, they are correctly referred to as suppressors. Not silencers.
So, technically, her entire diatribe is based on a technical falsehood.

I have 4 suppressors (2) rimfire, (1) .30, and (1) .223. I do not shoot my AR-15's without having the suppressor on the rifle. The suppressor eliminates the sound of the expanding gases leaving the barrel. What you still hear is the bullet breaking the sound barrier. Which is more of a crack than a boom that people typically associate with a gun shot.
So when I am hunting with my suppressor it helps in 2 ways. First since you are containing the gases leaving the barrel the muzzle rise is almost negligible from my .223 or .300 blackout. So I am able to stay on target with my scope after pulling the trigger and look for bullet impact. Second I find that after the shot you don't have any echo so you can hear the bullet impact your target. When I take my AR hog hunting with the suppressor I can see the bullet hit the hog and hear it. So I can know for sure if I made a good shot or not.
Yes

Why are people so defensive of stuff like this? He's just asking questions that most people that aren't gun experts would ask.

For sure, I own several guns and know how they sound. I can hear a shot and tell the difference between a gun or fireworks. A lot of people can't though and I fully get that. There's always a quote in news stories about people thinking a round of gunfire was someone playing with fireworks

Serious question and not a troll:
What is the point of a silencer for the general public? Is there a hunting or self-defense purpose?
Less recoil, quieter.
Hunting with them is big in the UK.

It's already pretty difficult to be approved for a suppressor.
Posted on 3/20/17 at 12:29 pm to TheCaterpillar
No actually Europe is a good example. Yea it is hard to get a gun, but I you do it is almost mandatory that you use a suppressor when shooting.

seriously, there's some fired up people in this thread

I wouldn't say difficult, but it takes the better part of a year to get approved.

It's called using Google, people can't figure out the answer to a basic question or at least learn enough to be somewhat objective then they deserve the answers they get. Probably something you should think about given the content of your posts.

No, Hiram Maxim's patent for the first one called them suppressors. So technically calling them silencers is correct. Even tough they don't "silence" the firearm.

You're kind of a prick, FYI.
I have shot guns plenty in my life, in both indoor and outdoor ranges and hunting.

I've talked about it still being loud in this thread. Seen one fired before at an indoor range. Rock concerts aren't hearing safe either FYI.

Yeah I've done this. Plugs and muffs and my ears were fine after over an hour of shooting and people shooting on either side of me.

So they don't have to wear plugs and muffs? The frickin horror.

FTR, I also said I don't know why they're hard to get. Real criminals don't use them anyway. I just asked for practical purposes of them. So currently, if you really want one, you can get one, provided you wait 9 months and you're not a felon.
