Serious question and not a troll:

What is the point of a silencer for the general public? Is there a hunting or self-defense purpose?

Why the hell would a criminal be allowed to purchase a silencer for their gun? Isn't that the point? To make sure criminals can't buy/own guns?

Prevention of crimes they think you will commit when you own a silencer/suppressor.

If you consider something louder than a rock concert "quiet," then I guess what she said is true.

Also, a suppressor makes it about on the decibel level of a car door slamming shut, right?

Technically that would be a lot easier to hide you shooting someone than a gun shot, which is loud AF.

I also think Gillibrand's reasoning for opposing suppressors is a stretch, but I'm not sure she said anything laughably false. Could a suppressor make witnesses less likely? Of course. I still think it's a dumb rationale, and she's playing on people's ignorance, but I don't think she's created some newsworthy error here.

This. She never says a "silencer" makes a firearm completely silent. I disagree with her reasoning that they should be kept out of citizens hands just because it would make crimes more easily concealed, but this is not a new or original take. My understanding is that law enforcement agencies like the ATF have been the biggest proponents of keeping supressors wrapped up in red tape. I'm sure the fact that they make money off the application process is a factor, but it's obvious they aren't thrilled about the potential for shootings to go undetected. I've fired several suppressed handguns and it would be tough to make out the sound through exterior walls.

They won't. The bill is simply trying to remove the $200 tax stamp and 9 month waiting period. Convicted criminals still will not be allowed to legally purchase them just like they can't legally purchase guns.

Maybe because you don't know much about the topic either.

The part about making it easier for criminals to get a supressor is false. The part about making it harder for police to solve a shooting crime is false. The part about being shot by a gun with a silencer "is quiet" is false. If you imagine otherwise I'll be happy to school you on the specifics.

The maker of this graphic needs to speak to Napoleon ASAP and get a quieter dishwasher. I believe metal bottom ones are what he recommends.

It's louder than that but doesn't have the same loud crack as a gun shot. Most people wouldn't even notice if you aren't familiar with the noise and heard one a few houses over

Wait, all convicted criminals can't buy guns?

Like at a gun range or hunting? They have ear plugs and ear muffs.

Silencers are a pain in the arse to get and the waiting period is about 8-9 months last time I checked. The noise of the gun usually doesn't matter to the type of people that are shooting at each other on the street.

In Europe it's considered rude to hunt without a suppressor.

I am all about protecting gun rights that really matter.

I'm just a novice when it comes to supressors/silencers. Saw one being shot from a handgun at a range it sounded pretty loud still, but it was not even CLOSE to a normal gun shot noise.

I've just never heard of a practical use for them that ear plugs while hunting or ear muffs at the range can't handle.

Also, I'm not sure real criminals even fricking use them. So I'm not sure the point of anyone being upset about them being easier to get either.

Basically, the question I have, is what do people use them for besides to shoot at the range without ear protection?
