This. If they really want to search it, they can get a warrant like everyone else.

The good thing about customs and BP agents is that they tend to get frustrated after a while and end up saying "frick it"

Good luck. Mine has a alphanumeric password 15+ characters long, touch to unlock disabled and wipes after 10 tries (or remotely- takes one outbound text).

Apparently it's perfectly legal to do this at the border

One big issue is that "at the border" has been continuously re-defined to include more and more.

Um no. They don't need a warrant to look at your phone.

quote:

February 9, Haisam Elsharkawi was stopped by security while trying to board his flight out of Los Angeles International Airport. He said that six Customs officers told him he was randomly selected. They demanded access to his phone and when he refused, Elsharkawi said they handcuffed him, locked him in the airport's lower level and asked questions including how he became a citizen. Elsharkawi thought he knew his rights and demanded access to legal counsel.

"They said if I need a lawyer, then I must be guilty of something," said Elsharkawi, and Egyptian-born Muslim and naturalized U.S. citizen. After four hours of questioning in detention, he unlocked his smartphone and, after a search, was eventually released

no it paints a picture in my head that 99% of these males think they can do and say what they want.

what he most likely said that is conveniently left out was probably enough to piss of border patrol. thats when he deserved to be choked out

Enough to know that failing to divulge my password doesn't amount to that.

No doubt. But he would not have gone to jail for failure to divulge his password. It probably ruined his day, but when you are obligated for other reasons not to divulge it, it wouldn't matter that much to you.

If they got a court order requiring me to divulge my password, they'd get it in a heartbeat.
