Honestly, some people don't even understand the concept of calories.
And they're not going to be educated. If they don't understand food intake as adults, they're probably not able to be educated.

Cmon man. People know that if you eat McDonalds, you get fat. They don't need to be educated on it. They're fat usually because they're lazy. Our poor people have incredibly high rates of obesity. And it's not because they don't know Ho Hos aren't part of a balanced diet.
It isn't just about getting fat though. You can eat fast food every day of your life and not "get fat," but not getting fat doesn't mean you're healthy. I think that's a lot of what people don't necessarily realize.
Most people think they can eat whatever they want as long as they feel good then when they start to feel bad they can stop eating like crap and feel better again. It doesn't always work that way as you can do lasting damage to your digestive organs based on what you put in your body nevermind the risk of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.

Talk about a bubble, this is screams of snobbery and elitism.
Have you even heard of food desserts? I'm guessing not.

Spot on. When facts/logic don't back up what you say, appeal to the emotional side of people.

Shreveport, not really a town, lol. I left that out because of the hate that would rain down if I just said Shreveport.

That's true, some of these folks are voting against their interests without even knowing. I feel sorry for their situation and lack of awareness. But not to the point I want to give away more of my income, or vote a different way, in efforts to help them. Not my cross to bear.
Maybe the average voter can articulate that a little warmer than I just did, but I'm willing to bet your run of the mill swing voter, let alone a GOP/Trump voter, is not willing to financially sacrifice for these folks. Especially if you have your own family to feed and educate. Well meaning, but politically I don't see it as something the Democrats should harp on...won't win them enough votes. The goal is to win, after all.

Sure, that's what a good portion of politics is, and both sides play the game. Facts show that very few Middle Eastern immigrants/refugees commit violent crime, yet we're moving heaven and earth to keep them out of our country over fear of them committing these crimes.

And if education isn't enough. The government can induce and tax behavior. See cigarettes.
We are better off because there are less smokers in America, don't you agree?

I don't think that's the entire reason why there is opposition to letting in large numbers of refugees.

Lol.
You mean food deserts. And yes. I'm very familiar with them. They're nonsense.

Politics aside, these people are vulnerable and need help. We can disagree on how, but we all need to step back sometimes and realize that real people are going to be effected by this new healthcare law.
People were affected negatively by Obamacare.
When making decisions, especially types of decisions on a stage like this, emotion should not be the driving factor.
While it would be nice for everyone to have access to top notch care whenever they need it, I'm not willing to force the middle class to pay 3x as much for worse coverage to accomplish this.
People who want to use emotion as the sole driving argumentative factor for healthcare, are more than welcome to start donating money out of their own paychecks.
Wanting to affect positive change and use your own time and money is one thing. Wanting to affect change and expecting others to use their time and money for it is another.

Are there though?
Perhaps my interpretation is colored because I have family that owns a convenience store, but people are going to buy their cigarettes. They may go without other essentials, but they will get their fix.
If the state is making money off the tax and putting it to good use I am in favor, but by and large, I don't think there's should be repercussions for this sort of thing. The only reason I might is because second hand smoke can cause harm to non-smokers.

Education can only go so far... When liberals try things like soda taxes, conservatives get mad. What other solutions are there?
Do you think people are so stupid that they don't know cigs, fried foods, and ice cream is bad for them in large quantities right now?
Then you want to fix the problem by govt. taxing more.
Didn't govt. 'fix" the coal miners? Didn't the president brag about running them out of business? And now we see the result, a coal miner going on Medicaid to get medical treatment.
Maybe the govt. can raise taxes on soda so soda companies can lay off workers and that way we'll have more people dependent on govt.
Isn't that the cycle we see now?

I agree with almost all of this.
If everyone voted for their own CURRENT economic interest, this would be a liberal country.
I think poor people who vote R strictly on economic issues do so on the hopes that one day they will be rich and enjoy the republican benefits.

Let unhealthy people (by their own means) deal with it as their resources allow. And I'm not sure there is a real easy way to do that when you also include taking care of those that got the shite lottery of life and are born with some rare disorder or become afflicted later in life with some degenerative disease. But in my perfect world that is how it happens.

Hi, we've been struggling with paying our premiums. Will you help? A contribution of $500 is fine.
Glad to see you're all about helping folks.
Thanks.

Dude, please.
Increased production of natural gas through fracking is what has forced coal mines out of business.
Why you hate natural gas?

It's not about what I think... It's what the data shows. A whole lot of people simply don't know.

Or maybe they can innovate and make a profit in other ways. I read that bottled water is now the largest profit center for these companies. They will be ok.

Don't care to read because personal stories and anecdotal evidence are the worst ways to make public policy.
Facts don't care about feelings.
The only productive public policy and laws that truly benefit the people are formed around statistical evidence as to what benefits the majority of people without infringing on the rights of the majority to help the one off minorities.
