I've never understood the Nazi pageantry and the rampant drug use by all forces.

The guys were eating amphetamines like candy.

You would probably do a lot of drugs too if you experienced what they did and seeing all of your friends getting blown up all day long.

The political climates of Japan and Germany in the late 20's and 30's that led to the war interest me the most.

The ultra-nationalism. Limiting critical media, creating cults of personality. The things you need to watch out for to make sure never happen again.

Propaganda my friend.

The country was destitute and the lavish pageantry was intoxicating for those people.

Nazi's weren't the only ones.

The disputes between the Japanese Army and the Navy about which direction to take.

After invading Manchuria they had contemplated going North into Siberia to get their resources. But they got their tails kicked by the Soviets in 1939 and the non-aggression pact between Hitler and Stalin nixed that.

So, they decided to go South and inevitably into directly conflict with the US.

I'm fascinated that the winners of the war wasn't something that was inevitable from the get-go. Unlike other conflicts where it seemed pretty obvious when you look back who was going to win, you could make a reasonable argument that had Hitler made a few different decisions then the Nazi's could have a prevailed.

It was a legit conflict where strategy truly mattered.

Anything regarding Hitler's personal life has always fascinated me.

Failed artist, passionate opera fan, etc. He had a loving mother and a drunk father, but that was still better than a lot of kids.

It's not like he was chained in a basement as a kid and was morphed into this animal. He was born an animal and brilliant and took advantage of a failed country pissed off at the rest of the world for the treaty of Versailles.

The SS state within the German state. Hitler himself had misgivings about it, but he was so preoccupied with the war effort that he was unable or unwilling to reign Himmler in. If Germany had survived, there would have been a showdown. The usual suspects at the top of the Nazi leadership were already positioning themselves to be Hitler's successor. Himmler, Bormann, and Goering each thought they had a rightful claim, and they all had reason to fear Heydrich.

At the time there wasn't much experience with the downsides. Everyone thought they were just fine, much like the previous generation played around casually with radium and heroin.

Lots of our current understanding of what is dangerous got that way after lots of people died and someone realized "Hey, maybe it isn't such a good idea to wear radium makeup so I'll glow in the dark at the party."

How worldwide it really was. And how deep it went into everyday American life.

Growing up with Vietnam and the Gulf Wars... our daily lives here didn't change hardly at all.

My dad was on leave during WWII in his tiny, tiny hometown in south Louisiana... He was about to walk around the corner to the store when his mom told him that it was too hot to wear his full uniform, so to make her happy he went out without his tie and cap. He said he got about half a block when a jeep pulled up out of nowhere and an officer jumped out to scream at him for being out of uniform. He never knew who that guy was or what the hell he was doing in a town of a thousand people.

The allies developed a super weapon, being the atom bomb, which helped end the war in the Pacific. Interestingly enough, this weapon gave birth to Japan's own super weapon. Unfortunately its development was dependent on the prior use of the atom bomb and thus could not help Japan in ww2.
