I have heard from at least 2 different and generally reliable sources that Kroger is looking to buy out Rouses and Rouses buying out Leblanc's was part of the deal. Anybody else hearing anything like this?

rouses has built a brand
I'm guessing the chances of your rumor being correct are 0.00%

now if the rumor was rouses buying Kroger that would make more sense

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I am not a fan of Kroger. Overpriced to say the least. Their signature stores are ok at best.

Besides, I really, really need an HEB-Rouses merger. Those two stores have a ton of similarities already. Rouses could pick up HEB tortillas and breads and a bunch of their branded items. HEB could dramatically improve their seafood and meat depts.

What would be the outcome of the deal?

To me, it doesn't sound good.

Rouses is spending a ton of money building new stores from the ground up over the next 1-3 years.

These stores would be most valuable for a company like Kroger to purchase them in 3-5 years. Nothing short term is happening to Rouses except for them acquiring more stores.

I would cry if I lost Rouses.

Hopefully not. Kroger, at least where I live, has much lower quality meat and produce than say Publix. It's starting to remind me of Walmart.

Stick with me, this story very much relates to this thread:

Today I needed a length of chain for a job up in Zachary. Google maps pointed me to the nearest Ace Hardware on LA 64 / Church Street, but when I pulled up to the store the only entrance I could find was to the adjacent Rouse's.

Yep, that Rouse's is merged with a fully-functioning Ace Hardware store. You can check out a gallon of milk and 3' of cut 5/8" zinc-coated chain at the same cashier line.

Can't say I've ever seen that before. Thanks to the deli it was the nicest smelling hardware store I've ever been to.

The grocery store model is in the midst of its last days. Let's see how these Amazon stores work out over the next few hears - no lines, grab n go with no money transaction. I can see a bigger chain like Kroger doing the same thing and buying out rouses since they are a much bigger operation.

Kroger bought out Harris Teeter here in NC, which was much bigger than Rouses.

Not much has changed. The local "flagship" store has a bar in the middle where you can get growlers of craft beer and pints. Also aged steaks, fresh sushi, and whatnot. I'm sure they would use the same concept for current Rouses in good areas. They'd probably even keep the rouses name, like they did Harris teeter, and won't rebrand.

Rouses took the Duplessis location of Leblancs backwards 10+ steps. Turmoil, lots of shite out of stock, lacking selection in areas and the quality of employee is way worse. It's still my best option here, but I feel like I lost a great chain for a mediocre one. Tonight's annoyance, no unbleached flour and the flour footprint is half the size. It's a constant theme every trip.
