caught a scrapper stealing gas from a neighbor.

I have a neighbor doing renovations and he has a skid dumpster in his driveway, so naturally scrappers metal dive for metal in it.
Well I saw the guy and paid him no mind. The I saw him walking in the neighbor's yard. So I went out to talk to the guy. He had already poured the gas in, and he went to start the truck and it wouldn't start.
Rather than be a dick about the gas, I got some starting fluid, sprayed it, got him going and then gave him $10 for a direct drive washer he had in the truck. (score)
Well I had already texted the neighbor about the strange guy grabbing their gas can.
Son calls first, talking MAD shite. "I would have pulled my gun out on that shite" "Let me catch him around here again" I just let him vent. Didn't say I helped the guy get going.
See the son is mad, because of the backstory.
The son is an idiot and he got the gas last night in the back of his Hyundai. The one he uses to deliver pizzas and Uber. He had the gas can FULL, in the trunk with NO lid. Not secured at all.
He pulls up, I can smell the gas from two houses over.
It was bad. Trunk is ruined, everything in it was too.
All that was in the gas tank was a half gallon of gas out of the two.
So he was bithching over the gas, because of his mistake.
Anyway. His mom calls, also wishing ill on the scrapper/thief.
I felt bad for the scrapper so I put $3 in an envelope, and wrote a note with my left hand and left it in the mailbox, and then left a gallon of gas on their doorstep in the container. Mainly because I didn't want them asking me for DVR footage and to keep this going.
TL;DR
Guy finds gas can in front of house and uses gas to get POS truck started.
Neighbor helps thief rather than chase off
Burglee upset because he can't store gas right
his mom even more upset over $1.50 worth of gas
Both upset but will come home to gas and money
I just wanted to play a psych game with them. Curious to see what they say later after wishing death on the man over this.
Oh and they guy who pilled the gas in his trunk was smoking a cigarette, threw it and it landed in the pile of stuff I pulled from his trunk.
Gas+polyester = a hard to put out fire.
(sorry for the dumb thread, had to tell soemone)

I Don't mean to pick on you but I'm imagining that the way you structured the story didn't do it justice. I don't really know wtf happened after reading it.

Next time throw some guns and tits into the story.

I'm posting this so when other people try to make sense of your story they won't leave disappointed.

Poor guy getting metal had his truck run out of gas while he was dumpster diving.
I see it, but felt bad for him and got him going.
I texted neighbor before going outside and feeling bad about guy.
Neighbor was furious.
But I personally refilled the gas can (I store a lot of gas)
And left a note and money to make the guy seem good.
This is hard to explain in a thread.

I followed except for the fire part.
Interesting way to handle the situation. Cool in a way, but also enabling a thief.

Dumpster diver stole some gas from OPs neighbor, but couldn't get his truck started. Instead of busting the theif, OP helped him start his truck and bought some junk from him. OPs neighbors are pissed about the stolen gas. OP leaves a note with money and some gas (pretending to be the thief returning it) to troll his neighbors.

I think if it this way.
If I am out of gas and in the no man's land between the sidewalk and the street there is a can with gas in it, I'm taking it too.
He knocked on their door first.

A lot of people were outside when he pulled up last night with the gas all over the trunk.
I told him to pop the trunk while neighbor spent a minute banging his head against the steering wheel.
In that time I reached in and grabbed all the Dominos uniforms soaked in gas and threw them in a pile.
The neighbor flicked a cigarette and it all caught on fire.
No pics. I was worried about getting it out before a Panda Bear drove by.
The gas in the trunk is why the neighbors are so mad.
I covered for the scrapper because they wanted to involve police.
