A/C not cooling down: Question

A/C isn't cooling down the house. My filter was dirty so I changed it. I have ice on the pipe coming off the outside unit.
I changed the filter and turned on the fan instead of the actual unit.
Will the new air filter clear up the ice issue? It was cooling and fine as of yesterday. I didn't notice anything until today.
Should I keep the fan on for a while then turn the unit back on to see if it cools?

sounds to me like it is freezing up because it is low on Freon. is air blowing freely out of the vents, etc?
I would turn the fan from "auto" to on and then put the thermostat to about 80 so the fan will run but not the compressor. that will thaw out the coil. when that is done, you can put everything back to normal and it may give you a little cooling to get you through the weekend.

You need a freon recharge.

Yes. I turned fan from auto to on. I didn't adjust the temp though. I will move it up.

Make sure your drain line is clear. Shoot in some compressed air. If you can find a drain line on the exterior of home, put some suction on it.

Even though my filter was dirty as shite, y'all pretty sure it's freon?
I totally just went retard on changing my filter out and let it get full.
How much does it cost for freon? Home360 is coming out at 8:00am. Just trying to gauge how much it'll be.

Just did this. How long does it usuallly take to melt the ice? There's no ice inside the unit. Just on the end of the little pipe that comes out of the bottom of the unit.

If your filter was extremely dirty there is a high likelihood that was the cause. Turn the cooling "off " and the fan on until there is no ice from the evaporator to the condenser. At that point turn everything back to normal and see what happens. If the fan is running and it freezes up again call a service technician out if everything runs fine you are good to go.

Run the fan and it'll defrost the coils in a few hours. After that, you can switch it back to auto and it'll cool until freezing again.
You will need a tech to come check the unit on Monday.

Can I add freon on my own? Sorry for all the stupid questions. This is my first home I've ever owned.

No. It's a controlled substance and you can't purchase it without a license.
It isn't like adding 134a in your car.

check to see what the intake side of your coils looks like. you may have clogged it up by not changing filter which would lead to it freezing over. if the filter was clogged really bad it could also lead to it freezing.

What's the rules on Freon now? Is it going out now with R22, or now it will just cost more?

If this means the coils on the outside unit walls, they are clear as are the pipes under the fan.

I just had an AC guy at the house in November and he said freon looked ok. Seems weird that it would be low now.
