Working on a psychological dossier on Dennis Reynolds

In your opinion what drives Dennis Reynolds to continue to surround himself with the low lifes in which he does? He clearly has the intellectual acumen to the sociopathic emotions to pursue ventures much greater than he currently does bartending and scheming with the gang. With a degree from Penn he could go work for a high paying investment fund in Philadelphia. Is it due to
Laziness? He just enjoys the coddled lifestyle living off Frank's money, however he didn't have any of the money when Frank first showed up so that may not be it.
Alcoholism / Crack withdrawals? Legitimate possibility.
Is he not really that smart? He was in fact made a fool of by the time share guy.
Does he not mesh well with others of normal intelligence? Clearly his high school classmates would say he does not. However, as sociopathic as he is I feel like he could advance to manipulating others which would be more of a benefit to his lifestyle.
Did Paddy's Pub begin as a well thought out business venture that possibly could have expanded only to have a rabbit hole of degeneracy open due to Frank showing up with an endless supply of cash?

He's superficially smart, but not truly intelligent.
And he can't hide his sociopathic tendencies well, which successful sociopaths can do. Within minutes of talking to this guy, you know he has no soul.

I think it is a combination laziness and alcoholism.

Dennis Reynolds is a serial killer. He's essentially Ted Bundy. Smart but obsessed with control. His passion and art is killing and that little run down pub in the middle of a sad lonely neighborhood is his canvas.
I truly believe this is the answer to your question.

Did you finish watching the episode last night? He's never actually killed anybody. And wouldn't that make him a psychopath?
Posted on 2/9/17 at 12:32 pm to Mootsman
Not yet. But the fact is, he's a killer. I think the show has been pretty clear about it. And the fact no one notices, or even cares, including himself, makes it humorous in a dark way.
ETA: wouldn't surprise me in the least bit if this was revealed in the series finale

So what we know:
- Alcoholic
- Sociopath incapable of empathy
- Superficially smart (well spoken, solid education), but not truly intelligent
- Extreme narcissism
- Extremely superficial (values things over people and relationships)
- History of crack addiction
What a guy!

Idk if this is necessarily true. The paddy's dollars plan mirrored off Dave and Busters business model was genius and the St. Patrick's day tour bus is an idea that would make Warren Buffet blush.

whatever he is, he is one of the greatest characters in the history of television

I think he just enjoys surrounding himself with people of lower intellect so he can continue to feel superior.

Dennis Reynolds is a low life himself. While many love and respect Dennis for his cocky attitude, sociopathic success with women, and his lack of giving a shite about anyone else, in reality, Dennis is probably deeply depressed and unsure of himself. So he hangs out with his sister, a mentally challenged friend, a dumbass business partner, and his deranged father. This makes him feel good. It makes him feel proud.
We are first introduced to this part of his character in season 1 when he sleeps with the hippy girl just to spite her boyfriend. The close up on his orgasming face told us the whole story: Dennis finds pleasure in making others miserable. His continuous compadres are always miserable, so Dennis keeps them around.

It's not laziness. Dennis isn't lazy. He works hard at keeping everyone around him lower than himself.

Maybe. But the bar was struggling so much they had to bring in underage kids in order to keep it going.

Do you remember feelings?

Extreme narcissism with a deep social phobia of being rejected. Only among the Paddy's Gang is he the "Golden god" that he claims to be.
I think it was the fact that Frank would frick with them as kids, such as giving them a privileged lifestyle to enjoy, all while doing things like buying the toys him and Dee wanted most for Christmas and destroying the toys in their faces. It developed his deep need for acceptance.

I think this is it. Dennis is brilliant in ways to serve himself and only himself, which he is most successful with when it involves Mac, Charlie, Dee, and Frank.
He is delusional to the point where he thinks all of his past interactions with others outside of the Gang were positive for him, yet we always find out he was being ridiculed the whole time. I think deep down, he knows this, and that's why he chooses to hang around the Gang permanently.

quote:the running gag about him being a sociopath is really funny (i laughed my arse off when the cop left the interrogation room last week)but with the exception of Charlie and maybe dee, they're all sociopaths
sociopathic
frank and mac are just as bad if not worse.
quote:there's this myth of psychopathy and sociopathy being associated with high levels of intellect which is simply not true. A lot of sociopaths are not only in the double digit iq range, they're emotionally retarded as well.
He clearly has the intellectual acumen to the sociopathic emotions
i see this myth resulting from America's fascination with serial killers, but for every ted bundy, there are a plethora of people like derrick todd lee or gary ridgway. high iq sociopaths tend to be incredibly successful and not tending bar, and you could live with one for an entire lifetime and not suspect a thing.
