Knowing Congress they'll pass a tax on the number of "carbon-dioxide reduction devices" one owns.

So both my trees and all my bushes will be taxed. On my lawn, will they assess per blade of grass or one flat rate for the front yard and one for the back? And if a tree dies during the year, can I get a refund?

If the Progs have it their way, one day we will all be hooked up to capnography devices and each quarter assessed for the amount of CO2 we emit into the atmosphere.

None of these dystopian scenarios have taken place in countries that already have a carbon tax.

Well then when they do I'll start objecting to it. Until then this is stupid slippery slope stuff along the lines of "every tax increase => communism!"

Creating a carbon tax is a dystopian scenario.

Only if this abolishes and replaces the income tax.

Basically it's a fancy sales tax.

I never understood why republicans didn't use the carbon tax to implement something like a fair tax. You could sell it to the left as an AGW initiative, and to the right as tax reform.

Trump is exposing what we've all known. There's zero difference between the left and the so called right. it's all about putting money in their own pockets.

The problem is that in order to replace the entire income tax the carbon tax would have to be insanely punitive, even more so than the most pessimistic social-cost-of-carbon estimates.

Hint: ithe goals isn't really curbing pollution. The goal is more money and influence for government.

If anyone really wants to get tax reform through, they should remove the part of the code that requires employers to deduct income taxes for their employees. Fast forward to the next April 15th, and we would never see another tax increase suggested.

Not if you don't tax the carbon for a problem which doesn't exist.

well it would have to be somewhat complicated formula for it to work including taxing certain things at a higher rate.

But it would be a way to get tax reform through, and satisfy the left.

I read an economist article on this like 10 years ago, I will see if I can dig it up.

I think the problem with that is the country would go broke, as most people I know don't keep $10-15k sitting around in checking.
