Trump Is Right: Silicon Valley Is Using H-1B Visas says The Huffington Post!

Huff&Puff bends the knee
quote:
This drafted executive order could actually mean higher wages for both foreign workers and Americans working in Silicon Valley.
quote:
The order aims to overhaul and limit work visas, notably the H-1B visa program. Tech companies rely on these to bring in foreign talent. Their lobbyists claim there is a “talent shortage” among Americans and thus that the industry needs more of such work visas. This is patently false. The truth is that they want an expansion of the H-1B work visa program because they want to hire cheap, immobile labor — i.e., foreign workers.
quote:
A former manager at Oracle accused the firm of justifying underpayment of an H-1B by saying, ‘It’s good money for an Indian.’

One of the first things Hitler did was limit H-1B visas in Germany

There are a lot of half-truths here.
Are there some specific skills that are dominated in IT by foreign nationals? Yes.
Are some companies paying them less? Yes, some companies do pay them lower SALARIES on average due to the cost of sponsorship.
Do some companies pay them standard rates, plus sponsorship? Yes
Would some IT companies be short of talent if H1Bs were sent home? Most definitely.

To me its pretty obvious that tech is lining up behind the immigration ban to get in front of the H1B visa EO. Its their primary concern.
Pretty smart move really.

Well, that's presumptuous. Must be an op-ed piece.
As a person who works in the tech sector, I can tell you that a lot of Americans are NOT qualified for several software development positions.
If a guy from India can come in and code for a company, and the alternative is wait for someone who is American a full 6-12 months to get up to speed, in which time the product is no longer viable...
Well, I'm not going to be opposed to getting someone from India.
Sorry, you don't get to claim "they stole mah jerb!" if you aren't capable of doing the damned job to begin with.

Prepare to be downvoted into oblivion. Truth about the IT job sector is unwelcome here.

Thats a good argument. Do you also feel that affirmative action is adverse to your point because I do.

Yeah, it's just what I do for a living now. LOL
Oddly enough, I haven't had a day off in over three weeks? Why? Because I'm responsible for staffing several roles on the west coast where 90% of the current candidate pool that I am seeking require sponsorship. My company will sponsor employees, but they want us to literally kill ourselves trying to find American workers first, which I'm fine with.
I've collected a ton of data the past year that supports specific skill sets where 90+% of the pool that actually has it is visa dependent. It is a fact.
Personally, I don't care what this board thinks. LOL

H-1B abuse is something both parties are disgusted with. Companies would rather train and develop foreign talent at $60k per year than someone with a green card or an American citizen.....because they'll eventually leave the company if they are underpaid.
Abuse of this work visa is a big reason why we are not developing enough Americans in this industry.
This impacts a shite load of Democrats and Republicans. Trump absolutely has to try to make this work visa about bringing the best and brightest again instead of the cheapest.

Do you think, if more of these jobs offered greater salaries, and that more of these opportunities were opened up to college grads, that maybe, you'd get more Americans working for the job?
I don't think someone is going to spend their time and go through college to get offered the same low wage you are giving foreigners, especially if that means having to relocate to California where the cost of living is ridiculous. Maybe, if you put in the ground work with America's youth, and pay them well, then you will get more qualified Americans?
I get it, it's cheap high skilled labor. What business owner doesn't want that? However, if you are wanting to change the landscape of the country, and get America working again, you have to force businesses hand. Now i don't know the full details of the H-1b program, but i'm fairly certain Trump isn't calling out an all out ban on foreigners, do you?

No, he's not, especially in IT.
Are there some companies abusing this? Of course, but that is NOT what I see as a norm. Besides, those with these skill sets that are in demand will leave their employer if they are underpaid and go elsewhere. One of the reasons why they love America. LOL
Now IF Trump is willing to help American companies also with training/development to help replace these H1Bs, then I will listen. Until then, kicking these productive folks out will not help many in the industry.

Start talking to universities about adapting their curriculum. NLU's (now ULM's) IS/CS programs were pretty much feeder programs for WalMart's backend (which is why COBOL was still part of the degree requirements into at least the late 2000's).
