I was raised in the church and attended Bible school and Sunday School and never once remember a story about Jesus fleeing to Egypt as a refugee.

Your argument is one from absence or silence. We don't "know" those things didn't happen simply because we don't have a record of them confirmed by a non-biblical sources other than the likes of Josephus. It's assumed that they didn't happen by those who disregard the Bible because there isn't corroborating evidence to support it.
Don't get your jimmies rustled. All we're saying is that there is reason to believe that the bible is, at best, incomplete, but more likely inaccurate on multiple levels. It's not a knock on believers. You can still be one of faith while still questioning the accuracy of the translations and not trusting the Catholic Church's decisions to canonize some writings and not others.

If you believe the bible is a historical document, you should believe that Jesus fled to Egypt when Herod Antipas was allegedly killing all the males in Bethlehem.
Matthew 2:13
And when they were departed, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeareth to
Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and
take the young child and his mother,
and flee into Egypt, and be thou there
until I bring thee word: for Herod will
seek the young child to destroy him.

The Bible is clear as are the teachings of Jesus. We Christians are to help the foreigner along with those in need. 12 Biblical references to that are quoted in the linked article.

Sharpton is an idiot, but I'd be interested in someone explaining in what way Jesus and his earthly family didn't fit the definition of refugees? They fled to Egypt to avoid Herod I's decree that all male children be killed due to his fear that a "King of the Jews" had been born among them who would someday threaten his crown. So there is a political element here, and tangentially a religious one (Herod wasn't really a Jew and constantly feared being seen as illegitimate and being replaced by the Jews).

If you don't even think he existed...that's pretty extreme considering the biblical and non biblical accounts.
All I mean by that statement is that of the records that existed during Jesus' life, none of them mention him. The gospels were written many years (some hundreds of years) later. It is not unreasonable to question whether Jesus even existed. Just because the likely-bastardized oral history eventually became text, and just because 1000 years later, Mohammed mentioned Jesus in the Koran, does not prove that Jesus lived.
That's all we're saying. Doesn't mean Jesus did NOT exist. Just covering the bases. The historical evidence is very weak.

I thought Jesus went to Egypt for his early years to avoid Herod trying to kill him?

Didn't Mary and Joseph flee with Jesus to Egypt temporarily because King Herod had ordered all newborn males killed?

Jesus was never suspected of wearing a suicide bombing vest, or to harm others.

I haven't read the whole thread because I'm lazy but a good portion of Egypt was under Roman rule just like Judea was. Jesus never left a Roman province when they fled. It's like fleeing from Michigan to Alabama. Unlike a majority of refugees today, Jesus was willing to return despite the danger posed to him that ultimately led to his death.
I get the "Jesus was a refugee" argument though. It's a good way to make people think outside of the box. I not a huge fan of the refugee ban, but this isn't the great "gotcha" people think it to be.

How many have left after getting here. How many have gone home to fight for their country?

I think someone already attempted to do so. Your dictionary definition of a refugee (can't look up the US statutory definition at the moment) is "someone who has been forced to leave their country ..."
The poster equated it to Jesus leaving Oklahoma and going to California, as Jesus was within the Roman Empire. Is this wrong? I don't know what all locations encompassed the Empire.
If we're going to do a literal reading of the definition I think it's fair to point out what role and authority Herod had, what land he controlled, and if such land was indeed a country.

Ahhhhhh the very reason we are vetting refugees is a matter of national security. And Jesus didn't want to kill others, duh...
Sharpton is as you said a race baiting pimp. Leave Jesus out of this.

Point taken. We know he was under two when they fled. We don't know how old he was when he returned, but he was probably around 4 given Herrod died in 4 B.C.
Given the prophesy in the old testament, one would think Joseph and Mary knew what was in store.

I was labeled a refugee in 2005 due to a natural disaster. I didn't leave the country. I didn't appreciate that label, either.
