The wife and I have been talking about how we would like to retire out in the sticks. The more i think about it why not do it now when i am still young enough to physically take care of a large piece of land and really enjoy the outdoors with the kids. Anyone ever make a drastic change of life like that and how did it work out? Figure i might get better responses here than the OT. Biggest hurdle would be finding a source of income out there. Financially i could probably make it 15+ years on what i have in the bank but would rather not burn up savings to live at this point. Looking at southern MS right now.

We will eventually do it, but we have agreed we will not until in can be on water. On water as in cast from my land.

no family involved but I lived in BFE for 3 years up in PA. I lived on the edge of a town of about 200 people max.

There is something about just taking a piss of the front porch every morning to scare off the deer.

Montana would be a little too cold in winter for this coon arse. Would want to stay withing a 2.5 - 3 hour drive of Houma for family reasons.

My Uncle became a preacher and moved to MS. You could go that route for a source of income. What do you currently do for a living?

To buy a nice sized piece of land for a good price it would have to be in mississippi because land in Louisiana is crazy high these days, i have been looking for a few years now and cant find anything that i like for a decent price, especially around the new roads area

My co-worker bought 8 acres with an older 1500 sqaure foot house that was remodeled in Crosby, Mississippi for like 150k for his weekend get away

I'll head out a bit in about ten years, but my issue is I don't want to be in the sticks. I either want a big place near town or a place on water with others around.

I like neighbors fairly close and I am way to disorganized to live too far from town. Used to live about 18 mins from town. Sunday's consisted of about two hours of nap time converted to driving in and out time.

Naval architect / Marine Engineer. Not exactly in high demand right now with the oilfield the way it is and unless i try and sell designs from home pretty much non existent job market away from the water. Fixing to set up a welding shop at my current home for a side line gig. Could probably make deer stands/feeders up there. Looking for minimum 50 acres with decent home 4+ bedrooms. Would home school the kids till jr high that right there saves me $12k a year in tuition not including uniforms etc.

we have a place up in poplarville, not a house, but a "camp". 55 acres with a pond on hwy 53. I really like it up there, but unfortunately, like every rural area, you have to deal with the locals who have no respect for your property. Guess it will be different actually living there vs going up there every weekend. Folks just jump the fence and come fish our pond, have fires, whatever.

Other than that its really nice, good terrain, actual hills instead of just flat land. Land can be kinda pricey there though.

A friend of mine did this. We used to work together. He took a job working 30 and 30 overseas making like $200k/year. He moved out to the middle of nowhere with his wife and son. Sumbitch has a crap load of land with his own shooting range and all kinds of toys. He's gone half the year, but he enjoys the hell out of his life when he's home. He offered me a job. It wouldn't have payed as much as him, but it was still a lot. I sometimes wonder if I was foolish to turn it down cause I didn't want to travel overseas for a month at a time.

Yeah it seems to run close to a $1000 more an acre vs the Prentiss area. Have a feeling it is due to the proximity to NOLA. Working with around a $400k budget if i do decide to relocate.

I keep coming back to Kincaid being my only real option. The private areas of IC are just too hard to get to. Timberlake is pretty small and limited # of waterfronts.

Do your kids like to play team sports? Might be hard if you're in the middle of nowhere.

I would think you would want to stay w/in 30 minutes of some decent population if you have kids. If they had no interaction with peers and it was just you, your wife, and the kids all day everyday that might not be the best thing for kids/teenagers growing up.

We would definitely get them involved in 4H and whatever other recreational sports are offered. Only reason for the home schooling is that the elementary and middle schools where we are looking don't seem to have the best ratings but the high school looks much better. Could be a non-issue though as i am sure they are better demographically than Houma anyway.

Have you looked at the North end of Harrison/Hancock Counties in MS? Pass/Long Beach have pretty good public school systems.

There s a 17+ac track for 149K in my area. Down the Woodmen lane. Thought about buying it, but don't need it. It's next to some land I own.

From a hood to the sticks was how I did it. For those that are thinking of doing this later in life, DON'T. Land is a bitch to keep up and cost big money to do so. One becomes a slave to it. Number one reason I gave my two kids a couple hundred ac. Yes, I still use some of it. Any income, I get after any and all expense are paid out. But they have to take care of it and I'm about to put foot to arse due to lacking of taking care of it like I used to.
