Russia has invited the incoming Trump administration to Syrian peace talks it is sponsoring later this month with Turkey and Iran, part of a process from which the Obama administration pointedly has been excluded.

U.S. participation, especially if an agreement is reached, would be the first indication of the enhanced U.S.-Russia cooperation that President Vladimir Putin and President-elect Donald Trump have forecast under a Trump administration.

This is what happens when adults who have accomplished things are in charge.

The last 8 years of little petulant children being in charge is over.

No, it's not good. If we lose SA cooperation in the region then shite will absolutely hit the fan: you don't have to like them, but you have to respect them for being the regions super-power.

Given the amount of territory ISIS still has, I think peace talks at this point are premature, if the goal is actually to have a lasting peace in Syria. The Turkish Army has secured quite a bit of territory in a relatively short time, which also could throw a wrench into a long term peace deal. Turkey's historical sphere of influence on it's southern end extends all the way to Baghdad, which is also included in Greater Iran. The competition between Persian and Turkic peoples for control of Mesopotamia is quite old, with the current demarcation closely resembling the boundaries decided in the Treaty of Zuhab in the 17th century.

I honestly don't think any of the powers at the table will allow ISIS to exist as it does at the moment. And with the way the war has gone, I honestly believe peace at this point is merely a cessation of hostilities in a much larger series of conflicts.

For the most part, the US has most of the region as allies. Certainly, it has the most powerful countries in the region as allies.

If the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is no longer an ally, the. Several other countries in the region will follow. Granted, the ME is not a center of peace and harmony... But it could be shite tons worse. And the first pound of getting to that shite ton starts with the loss of SA as a somewhat reliable partner in the region.

So where is the "shite hits the fan" part?

"the reason we need to ally with Saudi Arabia is *your answer here*. If Saudi and the us break the alliance *insert consequence here*. The reason this consequence is bad for the US is *Insert analysis here*"

i made a shell for you.

Should make this exact same template for Israel. People always talk about how we need them as an ally in the region (let's assume, for the sake of the discussion, they actually are an ally). I'd like to see why we need any allys in the region. Why do we even need to be there?

Sorry, I'm on my phone and don't feel like typing a thesis. But simply put, the GCC will stick together. So if SA declines to continue giving the US assistance in the region, other countries will follow suit. This will have both negative economic and peace impacts in the region. SA and UAE are both very concerned about a stronger Iran.

Having Russia aligned with Iran and Syria... SA and other GCC countries are very concerned. They do not want a stronger Iran. Our presence in SA, UAE, Qatar, and Jordan could all be reduced to nothing. If that happens, I would expect Russia to assert more effort to increase control of the region.

That could start a whole new round of violence in the region that makes Aleppo seem like the Falklamds.

I've asked it 1000 times. same answer every time. "because they are our ALLIES!" no meat. all bone.

we underwrite their desires for hegemony. And their security.

not my problem. But since I'm not heartless, ill point out that the evil Alliance of the gcc and the US has resulted in millions of deaths since 2001.

Saudi Arabia is the primary country that funded, caused, allowed 9/11. Not only should we stop giving them money, we should drop so many bombs that you can no longer recognize it.

After that, Trump can sit with Russia and Syria with the USA's big stick and tell them what to do.
