When are we going to stop playing with these guys and sink some of their ships? That would stop their crap immediately...

The USS Mahan tried to order the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard boats to stop via radio communication, but the vessels didn’t respond to the request, prompting the destroyer to fire three warning flares, a U.S. defense official said.

Obama drawing a line in the sand again?

Those flares are soooo scary
They need to put some holes through their ouboards or just cut them off and let them run into the ship and let them slowly think about joe they fricked up while their raft sinks

I'm glad we signed that 'don't be mean to Iran' agreement. They will soon have nukes and not be threatened by our warning shots.
ETA- I'm sure they'll only use it for electricity though

Obama has drawn a line in the sand... the next step is to send in troops with super soakers filled with cool whip.

The time it would take to fill them with cool whip....

Don't think there is one over there right now, for the first time in a long time

These things have been going on since the early 80's.
We have had 3 Republican and 2 Democratic presidents during that time and none have decided to sink those boats.
The Iranian "navy" is nothing more than a bunch of gnats flying around and annoying everyone.

There are currently no U.S. aircraft carriers deployed in the Middle East after the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower returned to Norfolk and the USS George H. W. Bush had its deployment delayed.
Article should have said there were none deployed anywhere in the world; first time in years that has been the case.
Only 4 IIRG small craft, I'm surprised there weren't more as they usually send 5+.
Flares are SOP for <1000yds (0.5nm), which is pretty close when you are on a warship but not that close for the Strait of Hormuz transit. Not sure if this is still the case but in 2012, DoD said warning shots at sea are no longer permitted. You use alternative methods or it's inherent self-defense shoot to kill.
I went through the Strait of Hormuz on an LHD in 2009 and was monitoring chat when two ships in our group went through in 2011. There is a JAG Officer on the bridge of the HVA ship recording bridge to bridge traffic during transit and there are laminated cards provided that state what we can answer with answers, and what we are not going to answer. They ask the same shite every time and act like we are trespassing. They know we are there because they have SAM sites and coastal radar on a few of their islands. SOP is briefed to all involved prior to the transit.
<~200 yds is SOP for firing but they usually never get that close due to a MH60 helo being present with hellfires. I've seen them get as close as 50yds though and the biggest determination whether we consider any type of warning is whether they have weapons uncovered, ammo on deck or if the ammo is actually inserted into the weapon. If there's no ammo, we likely are only going to flare them or use loud acoustic directing machines. If there's ammo on deck, air support will likely keep them ~1000yds. Haven't seen them with ammo actually linked into the weapons to date.
A ship is concerned if they send out a small ship with C802 missile capability or 10+ vessels. DDGs and CGs carry a 5" round that fires like skeet shot that Iran wants no part of.

cut them off and let them run into the ship
That will never happen again since the USS Cole.

I get it, but do you honestly think Trump will order the Navy to fire on these type of incidents?
Posted on 1/9/17 at 12:58 pm to Tigeralum2008
The U.S. Navy swings a big dick. No fricks given to the tiny boats that stay 900 yards away, and pose zero threat.
See this? Yeah, this is enough to keep those guys dicks limp trying to come close.
