With President-elect Donald Trump demanding more ships, the Navy is proposing the biggest shipbuilding boom since the end of the Cold War to meet threats from a resurgent Russia and saber-rattling China.

The Navy's 355-ship proposal released last month is even larger than what the Republican Trump had promoted on the campaign trail, providing a potential boost to shipyards that have struggled because budget caps that have limited money funding for ships

Is there anything Trump is going to cut??? Trillion dollar stimulus, massive navy expansion, tax cuts, a border wall.
When does the conservatism part come?

Trillion dollar stimulus
He is just going to take Obama's stimulus that is still in the budget 8 years later, compounding annually at 5-6%, and reappropriate those funds to MAGA...

Defense is every bit as important as Infrastructure, CD. Just like with the Billions spent on Research/Development/Intellectual Property...if one's competitors have the power to just STEAL it...then it's all for naught.
I thought about Trump's tax cuts for Corporations, and what it amounts to in the real economy is that Corporations will use the tax cut money to replace the losses for higher (local) labor costs...and the money will go into the pockets of the LOCAL laborers instead of the Government.
Bottom line. Money goes to local working people, FOR WORK...instead of the Government allocating out money for social programs on the basis of non-employment/need...instead of work.
As long as we keep that money in the US, and spend it on things with value like economically accountable, EFFICIENT, Defense, Infrastructure, Education (real version, moral/civic and economic) and honest Research/Development...I think the numbers will shake out.

I'm cool with expanding the Navy if done properly. Hopefully a lot more subs. We need to decrease the size of the other branches though.

This is the problem. I used to work in the government ship building world and witnessed some damn shitty Navy and Coast Guard programs come through that was just mind blowing to witness the waste associated.

Did you watch 60 Minutes last night, GT? Autonomous drones, ships, etc. are the winning future. Efficiency wins every battle.
Giving our Military Research and Development secrets needs to be once again established as a crime punishable by death. Death in short order at that. The new high tech will be potently lethal on grand scales in the wrong hands. It's coming. Regardless.

Is expanding the Navy really necessary? It's already the largest and most powerful in the world.

I'm no naval strategist but so I don't know the correct number or makeup of ships needed. But I lean towards having a large standing Navy and a very small army. The army preferably being mostly a national guard function. The Navy is hands down our most important branch. They take a long time to build so it needs to be ready day one in the case of a large conflict. Armies can be raised much quicker if need be. The good part about having a small standing army is that we'd be less inclined to get bogged down in pointless adventures that don't serve our national interest. The Navy, with the Marine corps being part of that, can handle brush fires and contingencies that pop up from time to time.
