Now and in the immediate future Audio will be difficult to verify

Adobe has created what is essentially comparable to photoshop for voice.
By imputing a few hundred words of a persons recorded voice you can now make recordings that are indistinguishable from the real speaker.

Explains the Kerry audio now, thanks.

There are some things that shouldn't be created. This is one of those things

This will be used and abused by all sorts of bad people.
Cool technology, but not thrilled this exists now.

Between this and what ILM was able to do in Rogue One, who knows what audio/video will be real anymore? It's only a matter of time before video becomes available to the masses.

Believe nothing that you hear and only half of what you see

Yikes
I'm glad I'll never be important enough for this to be a problem

It doesn't matter, this is all a simulation anyway

There will be ways to verify it or not I bet. Technology works both ways

Would be awesome for family gatherings to add ancestors we miss.

Inadmissible in court.
And sounds straight out of the Terminator movies.

But what about the press? Lives and careers can be ruined by vindictive people. I just don't see any benefit to this technology, at least not enough to counterbalance the harm it can do.

We aren't in disagreement. Simply pointing out the only 'pro' I can think of, even though it's a 'con' when u need that for true justice

Sorry, didn't mean to imply disagreement. Your post about legalities made me think.

This technology only raises the standard of proof. Photoshopped pictures didn't suddenly cause people to lose their careers and lives did it?
You can probably Google "Hillary Clinton nude" (not recommended) and see photo evidence of her entangled in all sorts of naked shenanigans. Obama's birth certificate didn't suddenly read "Kenya", did it?
The people more likely to lose their careers are the ones who produce fake evidence. How relevant are Brian Williams and Dan Rather now?
Knowing this technology exists, if a recording is suddenly "found" of Ted Cruz's dad saying "I killed JFK", how likely is it that it will be accepted as proof?

Good thing they didn't have this 15 years ago and fake things like telephone calls from airplanes.
Whew, huh?

If you really understood the computer industry you would know that computers did not have the processing power to do this in 2001.
in 2001 the fastest computer system in the world was ASCI White. It was distributed memory processing system made of IBM SP Power 3, which took up a whole datacenter which clocked in at a Whopping 7TFLOPS at a cost of over 110 million
These types of systems work well for Computational Fluid Dynamics problems that run for days. week, and months but do not work well for codes that cant take advantage of being broken up in 3d grids and distributed to the processors and memory of 100s to 1000s of different compute nodes.
In 2017 a simple desktop PC can be built for around 15k that does 7TFLOPS utilizing something as simple as Tesla Video cards.
That doesn't mean that Governments have not had or been able to use this type of technology for the last 8 or 9 years, but they didn't have it in 2001.
BTW: A little background. I was the System architect for 2 top ten systems back in 2003 and 2004. I wont be any more specific on those two systems because I'd prefer not to identify myself.
