I've read a lot of theories about this claiming that he turned to the Dark Side during his encounter with Palpatine in ROTJ and that his anger took over enabling him to defeat Vader.

Yoda prophesies this in Empire Strikes Back.

Is this why he isolated himself on the island in The Force Awakens? Is this why Kylo Ren is looking for him? Is he going to seduce Rey to the Dark Side?

If Luke became a Sith Lord, like his father before him, it would truly make a powerful story. Will Rey rescue him and do for him what he could not do for Anakin, thus finally bringing the Skywalkers to redemption by Episode 9?

Thoughts?

Just one theory on this:LINK

There are many more.

Pretty sure he just wants to kill Luke.

Making use of the dark side does not necessarily mean he becomes Sith. He may learn to master both light and dark.

If I had to give you a guess, no. He isn't a Sith Lord.

Him wanting to start a new age of Jedi like Episode 7 suggests tells me that he hasn't turned to the dark side.

But if Rey IS his daughter, I don't know how he kept his feelings in check.

My thinking is he isolated himself because of what his pupil had become, and that he failed his mission to start a new Jedi order.

His anger enabled him to defeat Vader, yes. He did not turn to the dark side during his encounter with Palpatine. Luke is always on the tipping point throughout the original trilogy and especially ROTJ but never embraces the dark side.

Only the writers know why he isolated himself and why Kylo is looking for him, but taken at face value we can assume it's simply a history-repeating-itself motif. Luke is in exile after his pupil destroys the new Jedi Order and Rey was hidden away to prevent the dark forces from trying to turn her. Luke isn't secretly a Sith Lord. He has times throughout the trilogy where he is edging toward dark Jedi but that's about it so far.

How many movies can be made filling in the gap between 6 and 7? Knowing how 7 ends makes all of these stories dark ones.

Luke fails. Han and Leia divorce. Han ends up a scoundrel again transporting junk. After being general responsible for saving the galaxy more than once.

What was the original thought by Lucas? Why have the 30 year gap after Jedi? Did him ruining the prequels cause a longer delay? Now the original stars are so old they have to be killed off and actors are actually dying.

Luke being a Sith is just too big of a stretch. Him being on the brink for his entire life and isolating himself makes more sense. Also, if they write Kylo having anything to do with Leia's death will make him one of the most hated villains in the history of cinema. As his character stands now any turn toward good will be a stretch for fans. We barely got to know Kenobi before Vader killed him.

I believe in the books Luke becomes a complete Jedi and learns the dark side but comes back. I am sure that if Disney was going to take that arc into account it has already happened during the 30 year gap.

Seems like he was in a depression after failing.

Its seems common for them to be in a sorta self imposed isolation after being bummed out and feeling useless.

Obi and Yoda both were when luke found them.

If they are taking it into account, and those books are not canon, then they will have to show us.

He used his anger to defeat him, but refused to kill him.

Hahahahaha!! He's gonna have to get a lot better with the saber then. Luke would take him out in seconds.

I think having him in the horrible Force Awakens is more a marketing ploy to get people like you to spend money to relive your childhood:

No he didn't turn to the dark side.

Pretty sure they kind of set up what happened to him and why he left in the force awakens

He was about to, then realized what he was about to do when Palpatine said he would take his father's place.
