I thought our biggest issue last year was depth at pitcher. We had a couple studs, then a big drop off.

Lange and Nola were Lange and Nola in high school. They were special and you knew it coming in. Of course, we "knew" that about Latz too but...

My point is that there isn't quite that standout in this class as a freshman. I just don't agree with giving up on Gilbert or even McKay at this point.

the name is escaping me, but who is the lefty we waited on for over a year, he came in sparingly at the end of the year, and then transferred right when the season ended.

what was the reason he left like that with the potential to start this year? felt the staff mistreated him during recovery or something? just curious.

We didn't have consistency. Our "stud" was pretty mediocre for most of the season. And we actually still won lots of those games thanks to the bullpen and pitching depth. But then you lost AC and never got a solid #3 to hold on to.

I'm of the opinion that McKay should continue tried as a starter as well. Mainieri did say on the radio this morning that they are going to make a better effort on grooming a 4th guy this year because they don't want to go into next year with close to zero starting experience.

I think McKay or Gilbert could be one of those guys. I'm wondering if they just don't want to put Gilbert in that role if they don't have to because he can be very valuable out of the pen.

I'm currently figuring out the average leverage index for our relievers last year. 24 games logged so far I think. Best performance I've logged (I'm only logging returnees) is Caleb Gilbert against A&M.
Nice. Astro is getting married next year so I need to find another stats guy I can rely on to do my work for me...

I would like to see Gilbert as the main reliever with Kiel and Newman securing the late innings.

This is all dependent on a younger guy taking over the #3 and not looking back.

Eh... Hess has a lot of promise. Dude's velo is mid-90's from a high release point.

Our pen should be one of this teams real strengths. Adding Kiel along with Newman, Reynolds, and a healthy AC (hopefully by March) gets you a damn good pen that can get you two wins every weekend if you need it. Throw in veterans like Norman and Bain who can maybe find some success in spot duty along with the freshman who don't fit as starters and I don't think Caleb is really a "need" in the pen.

I have three ongoing projects that I'm working on, 2017 Recruiting Spreadsheet, 2017 Opponent Previews, and data input for returning players. I'm starting from scratch on a lot of stuff, but I've got my hitting spreadsheets figured out. I work on whichever one I feel like working on at the time that I have time.

The preview one has me learning a lot about the teams we play.

I agree with all of this. Doesn't mean he's hitting spots.

Oh, by no means am I saying pencil him in for Sunday, just saying he was pretty highly-touted out of HS

Deichmann is moving to right field. If only Romero could play 1st base.....

I guess Bryce has the inside track to take over there.

God I hope not, the Jordan twins aren't everyday players. Spot starters and bench bats.

To agree and expand on that, I would say that Norman and Bain's development as relief options are key to Gilbert's shot at starting. Our pen really could be lights out this year. I like a lot of the returnees better than some of the guys we lost.
