Shadows of the parking lot.
About 3/10 turkey hunts I start out on public land before daylight. I won't do it if I can't get there stupid early to make sure I beat everyone to the gate. I usually walk far away from the gate, as there are usually land mines all around the parking areas.

Buddy of mine growing up managed to fall backwards coming down from a ladder stand. Broke his neck and he was in a halo for at least 6 months.

My uncle drowned looking for a dog in the swamp. Hit something in his boat, lost control, and flew out.

Just being young, careless, and getting in a hurry. Grew up with gun safety drilled into my head and made a mistake that caught up with me.
Last group was coming in, got ready to shoot and they turned just as we were getting ready to call the shot. Sat my gun down on a big stump and started getting my stuff ready to go. Ended up on the opposite side of the stump, where my bag was. Ducks came back and I grabbed the gun by the stock with the barrel pointing the wrong way. Trigger grabbed on the ragged part of the stump and the gun went off. So in short, I grabbed a loaded gun, without the safety on, by the barrel and blew myself up.
Learned a valuable lesson the hard way that day.

I was around 10 years old and my dad took me on a deer hunting trip with some extended family up in north La. Another kid around my age was hunting a ladder stand with a single shot 20 gauge. Butt of the gun was resting on the top rung of the ladder. It slipped off and killed him. Was a rough trip back home. Thanks for sharing.

15 yrs ago my 12 yr old nephew shot and killed my brother on a deer hunt in Jefferson, Texas. Nephew shot at movement in brush without seeing deer. Killed my brother instantly with chest shot. Very tragic. Brother was not wearing his orange.

Damn. That's terrible all the way around.

Was riding bitch on the 4wheeler with my older brother. He was going about 30ish and a huge arse barb wire grabbed my ankle and pulled me off. Took about 3 inches of skin and meat that was still stuck to the barb. It sucked.
Had a nephew blow his big toe off with a shotgun. His dumbass hunted for another 3 hours cuz he didn't want to bother anyone.

Man some depressing stories I'm very sorry to hear guys.
To add to the stupidity:
I was 10 and dove hunting with my dad in New Mexico. I was on a fence line he was at the water tank to my left, birds flew from right to left and my swing put my first shot 6 inches from his head. I'll never forget the entire pattern on the silver water tank. Not sure how none of the flyers penetrated.
Hunting Mule deer in New Mexico I was 11-12 and we were walking down a steep rocky mountain and I slipped on a rock backwards into a freaking huge prickly pear cactus. My dad pulled literally like 50 needles out of me, I'll never forget him pulling my shirt off me with all those needles.

Day LSU played Illinois in sugar bowl, there was a steady sleet/snow mix coming down. I was seeing animals so against my better judgement I stayed up in tree. Went to climb dome and stand didn't get bite and when I moved top portion I slid down tree, 10-12'. Messed up my shoulder, but could have been way worse.

Climbing into a 12' ladder stand that had a 1' lip extended out past top rung.
Went to get off platform with my back to it (gun in one hand) and once on 1st rung tried to swing round and missed with free hand.
Fell feet first & hit ground with butt of gun hitting ground first. My head hit scope and it knocked me out.
Dad drove up at dark and found me dazed and huge knot on forehead.
Stand was torn down soon after.

Wow man. Sorry to hear that. I know it doesn't help you, but I think people need to hear of these stories. May save some lives.
In not good about wearing my orange TBH. No excuse...just lazy.

What?
I was just moving the thread back to the front page, just in case anyone wanted to add anything.
I, too, believe that hearing and reflecting on accidents can help us prevent our own.
Didn't mean anything specifically toward you, you just happened to be the last post.

I don't deer hunt much, I have always been in a stand. The OB has made me totally respect a ladder stand if I ever hunt on one, which I won't from all of these stories.

I can tell you from personal experience, not wearing your orange can be a very bad experience when it gets you shot, don't let laziness get you killed

Years ago I was riding on the back of a 3 wheeler with my feet hanging out over the fenders. The guy driving went off the trail a little and hit a big pine tree with the right side rear tire pinning my foot against the tire. Ankle was crushed pretty good and to this day I still favor it a little.
