9MM or .40 pistol recommendations

future first time pistol owner here, i have just about every caliber shotgun and rifle i could ever need, but i'm getting my first pistol for Christmas this year and i'm kind of torn.. first of all, i can't decide between 9mm and .40 cal. i'm not too concerned about price of ammo because while i'm sure i'll put 500+ rounds in the first month or two, after that, it will strictly be my home defense/vehicle weapon with the occasional time at the range
i have owned many different brands of shotguns and rifles, so i don't have a brand preference, so i guess my only requirement is that the price is at or under $500 (it's a gift from someone), and i prefer compact to subcompact semi auto pistols
here are a few i've been looking at, but i'm also open to other suggestions:
S&W SDVE
RemingtonRP9
Taurus (cheap i know, but maybe someone here can shed some light on it)
RugerSR9 or 40
SIG P250
these are the ones i've looked at so far.. i've read and watched reviews online, but i hold the opinion of this board in much higher regard, and like i said, if y'all have other suggestions, let's hear them
Thanks in advance guys

Go with a 9mm. The Ruger and Sig are the only ones on your list I would consider. Also take a look at the S&W m&p 9mm. They can be had for $400-$500 if you shop around.

HK VP9. Has so many grip combos it'll fit like a glove in any hand. And it's a damn fine handgun.

I own both. If your first go 9mm.

i just watched a youtube review where that particular S&W compared favorably to the GLock... i was actually leaning towards a smith and wesson, but i am also very intrigued by the RP

rattle, not to sound cocky, but if you're worried about how i handle pistols of a larger caliber since this is my first pistol, don't be.. i grew up around them and have shot on many many occasions - i've just never owned one
if you're reasoning is something other than my safety (i appreciate it though ), let's hear it

sweet gun, shot my uncle's in october.. a little out of my price range (i was told to pick out a pistol at or under $500.. i know that limits my options, but it's not a terrible price point)

Ruger sr's are proven to be effective

I think 9mm are easier to train your shooting habits less snappier than a .45

More capacity, less recoil, cheaper ammo, and with today's ammo almost no difference in effectiveness.

k thanks, i wasn't trying to be a dick... i'm just one of those 'why?' guys when i don't know shite

One... 40 is a worthless caliber.
Two... Just get yourself a glock 19 to start.
Three... Get a .45 next.
Four... Get a 10mm

The glock19 is out of my price range, I see them new for $629.99
Trying to stay at or under $500

Take that S&W off your list. For S&W you should be looking at a shield.
9mm for sure.
Get a Glock or S&W Shield. Make sure and purchase some good hollow points for carry rounds.

It's just crap
Maybe someone else will be along with a better more technical explanation.
ETA: Sorry. I said Shield. Shield is more for conceal carry. It's the S&W M&P will have the double stack with higher capacity that you want.
