Random's comment about Helfrich as a possible name to watch got me interested in reading up a bit.

This piece is a bit dated, but there's a similarity in a sense with Aranda: young, more bookish and quiet and intelligent.

No idea if he'd be interested, but if he was and LSU wants a bright offensive mind and a QB developer who is likely an OC lifer from here on out, then Helfrich fits the mold.

See, this is where the grownups in the room point out that someone taking over a hot program can look good for a while until he's completely running the show for 2-3 years.

Helfrich, btw, would probably be a very good OC. His crash and burn as HC does nothing to disprove that.

i agree. oregon kept gambling on transfer qbs and it caught up with them. that, along with experience and depth problems in the trenches spelled doom for helfrich. always going to be hard to have decent oline and dline every year at a place like uo.

Let me go find an article about "The Wizard" from 2007 and we can just bring that guy back.

Is it worth discussing that Helfrich has never really spent time away from the Western US? And only a few years outside of the Pacific Northwest.

1996 Southern Oregon (RB)
1997 Oregon (GA)
1997 Vienna (OC)
1998–2000 Boise St. (QB)
2001-2002 Arizona St. (QB)
2003–2005 Arizona St. (PGC/QB)
2006–2008 Colorado (OC/QB)
2009–2012 Oregon (OC/QB)
2013–2016 Oregon

He was born in Oregon. Played ball in Oregon. Spent 9 years coaching in Oregon. So are we surprised he's lobbying Chip to come back and reinstall him as OC?

The man can obviously coach offense. But recruiting would also be a big part of his job and he's rarely spent time in this part of the country.

I don't think recruiting will be a problem. If he can come in with a great Offense that will recruit itself, we have the guys on staff to bring in great peices.

if anyone ever needed an ideal situation to boost their recruiting ability in a certain area of the country, lsu has the right guy for that at the moment.

No need to read further. If random says he's a possibility then you should know it's not gonna happen. Maybe you should double down and wait for DALSU to confirm.

They averaged over 35 points a game. They gave up over 41. Offense is not what got him fired. Defense is. So, unless he is taking over from Aranda it would be a good hire.

Helfrich is better offensively than Kelly. The offense got better and was more diverse under him. What tanked him was all the other things his predecessor did that Helfrich didn't do. The culture changed, he lost the locker room. Guys started looking out for themselves first. He made a bad defensive coordinator hire in 2014 and waited too long to change it. Then he made another bad one last year. He didn't recruit as well.

Helfrich is a very good offensive mind. He is decent at QB development but not that great at picking QB talent if you look at his overall track record.

If he learns from what happened, he could be a head coach again. He's smart enough and he has the people skills. But it sounds like from his interview on Rusillo and Kanell the other day he maybe still doesn't get it. He wanted to be everyone's friend rather than the CEO who has to hold people accountable sometimes.

Yeah I imagine he prefers to stay West.

He's a great coach. Not a great recruiter. Really good dude.

Belotti wanted him at Oregon after he spent one year at Colorado, he said no because he didn't think it was the right thing to do to Colorado. Left there after 2 years, though.

Belotti has a great eye for Offensive coaches: Tedford, Koetter, Petersen, Kelly, Helfrich...
