We are required to have one on our person at all times. I see security give PPR to truck drivers all the time entering the plant. They just sign the equipment in and out at the gate. Dow safety is pretty strict on having your escape respirator attached to your person.

It's likely that they have a voluntary respirator usage program or have an area to grab respirators nearby in the event of an accident, but nobody requires an escape respirator, per person, into a plant.

In the past, I worked for a safety contractor in multiple plants. I spent most of my time in a plant that made chlorine. Every single person, regardless of their job was required to have an escape respirator on them at all times when inside the plant. It would really surprise me to learn that a company like Dow doesn't require the same.

Yeah you're required to have one but how many times is it "sitting in the truck/trailer"?
I work in a chlorine plant. You can get fired for leaving it behind. I always have mine on my belt. Company policy.

Maybe not into the front gate, but anywhere in the production area or not in a warehouse.

I had a site where we had to carry an ammonia and chlorine respirator any time we were in the production areas. Kept in my desk at all other times.

Dow policy on escape respirator is that it must be on your person at all times inside the gate. It must be initialed and dated, and changed out one year from the date that's written on it. The guys in this thread saying that their delivery guys don't have one doesn't necessarily mean that makes it ok. They simply haven't been audited and caught without one. There's a lot of PPE rules that get broken. Doesn't mean that your arse can't get nailed on a safety audit though.

Wrong. I currently work at Dow and it is definitely a requirement to have your escape respirator on you at all times. Dow and other contractor's safety department are very strict about such things.

My dad retired from Dow after 30 yrs. His respirator was always in his truck and he always said it was a requirement.

Knowing Dow, this incident will spawn enhanced observation of all personnel carrying a respirator. That's how it works. Some workers get caught up without one on a DAFW - it's going to be in every safety tailgate on Monday to always wear your respirator.

BASF Geismar requires one to be on you at all times. Oxychem does as well. That's just off the top of my head.

You can add Dow St. Charles to that list early next year. Right now one complex has to have them but it is already been approved to go site wide. Applies to everyone inside the gates. Now if we would just require FRC in every unit...

I actually could smell a hint of chlorine at the house last night.

Just a smell like a pool.

That's quite a few miles west of Dow.

That probably wasn't chlorine that you were smelling. It probably was a swimming pool. Trust me, you don't just smell chlorine gas. It takes your breath away.

I worked in the IT dept. there in the 80's. Can't speak for now, but back then a respirator had better be clipped to your belt at all times, or someone would write your arse up in a New York minute. Those people out there are borderline rabid/retarded when it comes to safety. For example, if you were standing on something more than a foot off the ground, you better be wearing a safety harness, even in an office environment. I also had to wear safety glasses and steel-toe shoes to work on computer equipment.

It's not that bad these days but Safety is first. Contractors complain all the time about all the red tape.
