Rankins presence is already being felt

you can notice how much the pressure that Sheldon creates opens up for Cameron & Nick to make plays. Now just need to get sign Fairley to a long term contract and draft another DE opposite Cam

They were collapsing the pocket all night long. Pressure or no pressure. Harder to do on the road too

Didn't they lose their center?

Yes. They did lose their center but Rankins still had a pretty good game!!

He's a lot more powerful than I thought he was.

The praise was strong for Steph his rookie year too.
Rankins has played about 29 snaps.
We'll see.

Meh. Anthony made a lot of tackles. Anyone paying attention could see that, while he would occasionally make an explosive play in the backfield, he was absolute garbage in coverage. Tackles don't necessarily mean a player made a good play so much as they had an opportunity to make a play. The DL is clearly playing better with Rankins and he's making things happen. Has shown good moves (has had at least one sweet spin move play), strength, and quickness. For a rookie coming off of a semi-serious injury, he's been fantastic. I had a hunch that Onyemata (who has been solid in his own right considering how raw he is) would end up being better than Rankins. That may yet happen, but Rankins has been better than I expected.

we actually have a potentially VERY solid foundation for a D next year if the injured players come back healthy and the young guys take a step. bell, vacarro, rankins, Onyemata, Breaux, kikaha, etc

I think the "Fire Payton" chants are short sighted. We are loaded with young talent. This defense may become a strength in a year/year and a half. It's not easy rebuilding. And people are not very patient but if you actually watch the team play you cannot deny the improvement and at some point our record will reflect that. We'll be winning the 2-3 point games.

i've been legitimately shocked at our D considering the draft whiffs and injuries this year
i mean we're bringing CBs (2nd most important position) off the street

The front 7 is close to being where it needs to be. We definitely need to have Fairley resigned. We need another edge rusher and we need another top LB to play with Robertson, who has been a pleasant surprise. I think that Bell and Vaccaro are a good safety tandem. Breaux can handle one CB. We need another corner to partner which allows Williams, Crawley and Webb to be solid backups. The defense is close. The focus on offense needs to be on the OL. Specifically, upgrading Evans and finding Strief's replacement.

I think we all forget about Kikaha too, and Edebali is coming along greatly. He's been getting tons of pressures (more than Kruger anyway).
If Ede can keep playing more contained like he has been (his biggest problem last year was playing too fast and losing contain on runs), him and Kikaha will be a fantastic one two punch.
Another rusher would be great, but not as urgent as other needs (which greatly depends on who we keep and cut).

I am in the boat of you can never have enough pass rushers.
If there is a tier 1 DE/OLB-Rusher available where we draft and its tier 2 Corners/LBers, give me the rusher
