While traffic & drivers suck in BR, its not JUST in Baton Rouge. Someone mentioned Houston, based off of my experiences from driving in Houston, I would take BR traffic any day over Houston's.

I drove through the heart of Houston during rush hour on a work day just a couple of weeks ago. When you consider the population disparity between Houston and Baton Rouge, it's not even fathomable how Baton Rouge traffic is so much worse.

You may be right but Houston is the most crowded city in the nation and leads the nation in POS vehicles that break down in the center lane of the beltway on a daily basis.

Quite the contrary actually. It's both living and traveling all over this country that gives me reference to exactly how atrocious it is in BR. Traffic is expected everywhere, but in the BR it's all fricking day long and bat shite crazy at that. It takes a pebble in the road to tie up the interstates all day and it happens literally every single day. Surface streets are an enormous joke, so you have to take to cutting through neighborhoods to get around town. Roads are in disrepair as is pretty much everything. You're nuts if you have anything else but a truck it would seem.

1). There was absolutely no planning put into this city, zoning, layout, you name it, and nobody cares to fix it Instead, they think of it as normal. It is not, I repeat, not normal

It's really sad because you look at the city maps up until about 1950 and they're relatively normal...then all hell breaks loose and no one cares about long-term development.

You all need to realize non-drivers are EVERYWHERE. Baton Rouge doesn't have a monopoly on them

I had some woman pull out in front of me on Airline yesterday causing me to slam on brakes to keep from slamming into her. I also laid on the horn pretty good. She thanked me by flipping me off.

Unprotected left turns should be a capital offense.

This!

Houston traffic moves. May be slow, may be a lot of cars. But it has some sort of flow at all times. Baton Rouge traffic is stagnant. You may sit at a dead stop for upwards of ten minutes sometimes, move 25 feet, stop for ten minutes, etc. And people in Louisiana have no sense of urgency. They'd rather spend hours in the car than to go somewhere. They love stopping at red lights so much, they would rather not pay attention to light cycles and stay stopped through 3 complete cycles than to pay attention and hurry up and go.

Interstates should not be used as expressways.

I drive mostly in Lafayette and Baton Rouge and it seems to me that the main difference is that in Baton Rouge, drivers will block traffic until their preferred lane opens up, while in Lafayette the drivers will just drive into their preferred lane, whether it is open or not. I've witnessed someone in Lafayette make a left turn from the extreme right lane of a five lane thoroughfare.

I don't think our engineers know what a loop is. Looks like they are learning about traffic circles though.

Ever been through the DOTD building? All of the engineers are from INDIA! Every seen video of traffic in one of the large Indian cities? Thar ya go BAW!

Houston is perfectly grided...I45, I10, I59..290, 249, 225 with 3 loops...610, beltway 8 and highway 6. All completed with service highways and most with HOV lanes.

We're talking 4+ million people. Lived there 6 years. The traffic is always moving albeit slow at peak times. J could go to tomball or Katy from clear lake the same amount of time I get stuck in this clusterfrick of traffic here. We BARELY have ANY service roads on our interstates. They need to double deck I10 and be done with it.

when your city was settled in 1700s or around then, not much planning other than the initial squares. heck, look at Boston.

Just described Lafayette to the tee. Rest of the state isn't any better, but the Thruway in Lafayette is like a three-wide NASCAR race. Only at 35 mph. And don't expect any rush when the light turns green.
