Do any of you go against tradition and do something other than turkey for Thanksgiving? Thinking about doing something different this year and looking for ideas.

We do not. Traditional Thanksgiving food is one of my favorite meals of the year.

I get that. But why don't people do it more often?

I buy one turkey a year. It's on Thanksgiving. If it were so great, we'd do it more often, no?

When we go to the big family gathering there are most of the traditional stuff along with non traditional things like a roast. Basically just a ridiculous feast of about 20 items.

I did a duck last year. Not outrageously different but not a turkey.

Cause it's a huge pain in the arse. It's delicious, but it's 3-4 hours of prep work, days of thawing a turkey, another 3-4 hours (minimum) of cooking.

It only lends itself to a meal when you have a day or two off work.

Plus, it (typically) makes a ton of food, so you need lots of people at your place to eat.

I think that's really the only reason.

My family basically makes the same meal at thanksgiving and again on Christmas eve, cause it's freaking delicious and we like to eat (shocking, I know).

We do Turkey at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Of course we usually have a ham as well. If it is a smaller crowd maybe a small ham and just turkey breasts. To me, those holiday meals are more about the sides. My wife makes excellent dressing, and she will make it any time of the year if I want it. But it is more worth the prep and all the cooking if there's a big crowd.

My grandpaw for years has been doing a pork roast stuffed with garlic, onions and red pepper (shite ton of garlic) to go with the turkey. I end up hardly eating any turkey because pork roast kicks arse.

My grandmother's health has gone downhill this year, and the stress has worn him thin. Therefore, I'm thinking of taking over the pork roast tradition.

If we go to Gulf Shores we do a shrimp boil. We usually always have turkey and dressing though.

I think part of the reason I like it so much is that we don't have it multiple times a year, so I look forward to it. On occasion, I'll do a mini version of it during the year. I love turkey, though.

We usually have some other kind of meat like a rump roast for those who don't love turkey, but mostly it's pretty traditional or traditional to us, anyway.

We have a big non Thanksgiving meal on Wed night with everyone, so it's sort of a marathon at Thanksgiving for us. It's sort of like having both non traditional and traditional within 24 hours. We eat TG at night on Thursday.

That's just what we do. If you don't care for the traditional, definitely do something else or mix it up and have a little of both.

I mean, I get it I guess. My bro-in-law might disown me if I don't do the turkey.

I may just opt to have a side. I like the idea of the pork roast as another poster mentioned. I wish I had some deer meat leftover, but my deep freeze went out earlier this year and I lost it all.

We used to go to the beach for Thanksgiving, and we'd do steak and lobster

Because buying a whole turkey is expensive. I absolutely love fried turkey and we used to do it different times of the year with tailgates and stuff.

Its a hassle, its expensive, and its not very practical. Plus thanksgiving is a time to be gluttonous which most people besides arse want to avoid but a couple times a year.
