Can I ask what book your son was told to read?
Just walked in and sat down at my computer. The book is Among the Hidden. I don't have a problem with him reading the book. I have a problem with the school's stupid teacher for assigning it without having read it herself and knowing what was in it, then the teacher and principal overreacting.

Imagine if the book was (which is in most public school libraries) Heather has two mommies.

We we are handing 11 year olds books depicting gun violence now?

Oh no! Gun violence!

See, this is the problem. Kids were reading stories about wars and battles and adventurers from a young age back in the day. Now people want them coddled like some little fragile China doll.

Maybe we focus on raising them instead of being worried if they read about someone shooting a gun.

I mean, zero tolerance policies are dumb, but this is a little different than chewing a pop tart to look like a gun

The difference still shows the idiocy of this "zero tolerance" policy. Anyone that can't tell the difference between a kid drawing a gun as part of fulfilling an assignment to draw an important point in a book from a kid drawing a gun with the intent to intimidate or threaten doesn't deserve the title of "educator".

if the kid wasn't advised otherwise I dont see how they could be mad at him for drawing this as it was the climax part of the book.

I think they should have just used this as a teaching moment instead of making such a huge deal out of it.

Among the Hidden is a 1998 young adult novel by Margaret Peterson Haddix concerning a fictional future in which drastic measures have been taken to quell overpopulation. It is the first of seven novels in the Shadow Children series

this had to come from a bank, I doubt the teacher read all those books then and determined the climax.

I bet that's why the principal was so quick to back down- it's probably part of some approved curriculum and last thing they want is that on the news.

Had the school not backed down I would have recommended lawyering up.

Need to do that anyway - Seems like there is a good case for 'traumatizing' a child - first by assigning him to read a book about bloody murder - then asking him to de4scribe the carnage and draw a PICTURE of the 'climatic' moment - and THEN calling him on the carpet and threatening to suspend him..

If someone has deep pockets to initiate such a lawsuit they should make the School District go thru the expense of defending it and dealing with the attendant public scorn.

I worked as a math teacher for the final 13 years of my professional life - and the School Boards make all decisions based on 'avoiding a lawsuit."

Turn this shite back on them.

I remember when I was in school and I got in trouble for drawing a nuclear bomb.

I still have it:

It's ridiculous how sensitive and PC people are today.

your vitriol is misplaced.

I said in my post its dumb. I simply see how the image would cause a school administrator pause, especially with all the talk of assassinations about these days.

Kid should experience no push back and the teacher reprimanded, but as a neutral party (it's not my kid), I can see how a principle would think "wtf".

Hell, the op himself said he admitted the picture was inappropriate.

Try to keep up.

It's not misplaced. Your comment came across as saying you saw how it could be seen that the kid was in the wrong. You did not give weight to the fact that he followed the instructions, and the premise was flawed from the beginning by the teacher's choice of book.

Don't want vitriol? Do a better job of framing your position.

Last day of school in 5th grade our GT teacher brought his N64 with Goldeneye and we had a Goldeneye Tournament

No one cared

We would play cops and robbers at recess and used sticks as guns
