if they seceded?
My answer is 10. They don't have enough people in the working class to carry their socialist views.

Tax rate of 50-60%? Everybody that made any money would move to Texas

1 day.
They would lose power and water and probably not even realize why...

Have you been to California? There is so much money out there it's obscene.

San Diego will now be a 3rd world city with the chargers not getting the stadium

Within a generation for sure.

The good thing about them would be we could still visit Cali because they would be a open borders country

It's well on the way. It has a few beautiful places but, only the rich can afford to live there. The suburbs and rural parts are in bad shape. Their roads are bad and not maintained properly. They are running out of water.
California is a disaster and most of the residents foolishly keep voting for insane politicians.

5 minutes.
Every citizen in California is in debt by about $12,000 (not even accounting for their share of federal debt).
Over 4 Million are on food stamps. Without federal handouts, California would suffer tremendously. And I'd sleep just fine knowing that. They couldn't possibly feed their people. They don't have enough water. Unless the US gave them a huge trade deal (which would send import expenses through the roof), they'd be a dead state walking.

I'll take the under on that.
California is a drain on water and power from other states. I don't see them getting the kind of sweetheart deals they get now if they were a foreign country as opposed to another state.

It wouldn't take long at all

Doesnt California currently return more in taxes than they take in in fed money? Unlike most of the South?

They may pay in more federal money but they eat a ton of resources in terms of water and power.
The growth in population there has been cannibalizing their ability to grow food due to the use of water for the cities and the prioritization of "the environment" over projects that would help provide water over time.
The NIMBY attitude on power has also made them dependent on other states, especially due to power-intensive industries like Silicon Valley setting up their server farms in California and browning out the rest of the state to keep them running.

8 years ago in some parts.

I've commented on this several times. I usually put it around 5 years. Given them the chance to have all their crap policies work through the system. By year 5 it would be Escape from LA.

quote:Clearly not. Of course the irony of someone from Illinois, Alabama, or Mississippi cracking on another state is pretty silly right now.

Considering they grow 2/3 of our fruit and 1/3 of our vegetables, they'd sort of have us by the balls
