Thanks. This is more or less the info I was looking for. Renting a room is the most logical and cheapest option for housing right now. Maybe the roommate.com question wasn't the right question...but renting a room in a house is what I was hoping I'd be able to do.

Both girls are playing sports, basketball and softball. Plus we've already paid for our three year old to go to preschool for the year.

I'm going to go out on a limb and not knowing where you live and say the schools there are better

If it's all you can afford, there's certainly nice places to live surrounding The Woodlands. But just being close to the area isn't as nice as being in the Township itself. I live pretty much on the very edge and am thinking of moving further towards "town center". Especially if you have kids, you can feel safe with them walking the paths to the park or the store by themselves. The Township keeps everything up very well. You know that your neighbors houses will be kept to a certain standard, etc. I know other places have this, but the woodlands does it well.

As far as boring is concerned. I lived in BR for 6 years. Woodlands has a restaurant/bar/concert scene that shits in BR's breakfast. Then it's not extremely far to get to everything Houston has.

In regards to commutes, I drive to the energy corridor e days a week. I take 2978 to 249 to HWY 6. If I leave at 6, I get there in just around an hour.

tact with a company in The Woodlands and will most likely accept the job if offered. My family will stay here in Louisiana and I'll move there by myself. Any ideas on affordable housing? I will not be getting per diem with this company, and I don't want to get into paying for housing in both.

Does not compute.

Woodlands FTMFW. My girl lives there right off the riverwalk thing, can walk everywhere it really is a kind of utopian bubble.

now a dose of realty, be aware that with all great things and places, everyone wants to be part of it and ruins it, buddy of mine has lived in the woodlands for 19 years, while its a great place to visit, live and/or work, a LOT has changed with more changes coming with a quickness, the place has become overrun with snobbish mexican nationals, $70K millionaires, the woodlands "elite" political propaganda machine is out of control attempting to maintain control of all aspects of the place, fighting off Houston annexation, the place has moved away from George Mitchell's vision unfortunately...

I would say this is true. When I first visited family that lived here even in the early 2000's, it was certainly more "wooded". Houses in the older sections seem to be more "quality". It is definitely falling into the quickly thrown up cookie cutter neighborhood style. But, it's still holding pretty tight to the restrictions and upkeep that make the township "nice".

I'd say this is one of the things they are doing to keep it nice. If Houston starts governing the area, then what power do the citizens of The Woodlands have to keep it special. If we cannot govern our own roads, how can we stop the county from deciding to put a major highway straight through the township that destroys traffic (worse than it is already). There are certainly two sides to the coin, but getting annexed by Houston certainly isn't the answer.

Several of the houses in my hood are owned by wealthy Mexicans though. It's really strange to me. They are never there though, so who cares.

Been here for 2 years. Was also relocated. We were in a similar situation where we didn't want to pull the kids out of school early because it was private school and we prepaid for the year. Family stayed back in BR for 6 weeks, but I had corporate housing for 3 months.

Mid point in the year I'd just move now. As far as the location we love it here. As others have said fantastic schools, I find them better than most of the private schools in BR. If you want cheap housing there are some options in Spring that are in the Conroe ISD. Also there are some neighborhoods east of 45 that have affordable housing. Most homes in the Woodlands proper will cost you in the 100$ per sq foot, we got ours for $86 but we are East of 45.

Main thing I miss about home are the restaurants. There are some good places in Houston but they are all an hour away. There's a bar and grill in Spring owned by a Louisiana native. 3Bs. If you are looking for your (here, not so) standard beer and burger joint. Good luck, I recommend moving out here, just about everything here is better.

I live in inner loop Houston. Single and no plans on moving anywhere. Own a house in Sunset Heights.

If I met someone and we agreed to have kids/need more space/suburbs I would live in the Woodlands. it is literally the only attractive full-time suburb in the Houston area.

not saying it is perfect, but if you had to spend your whole time in the suburbs, TWL is the way to go.

I lived there for 10 years. They actually plan out infrastructure in advance here, they put in sidewalks when a community is planned and they allocate greenspace in every neighborhood.

The only thing that Baton Rouge has planned in the last 10 years is use corrupt Louisiana politics to undermine the St George efforts. I miss a lot of things about home but I will never go back barring something cataclysmic.

Is Baton Rouge Detroit? No but it's close.

I probably wouldn't live here if I was single. You could do it living around the waterway, but it's definitely better to be in the loop. But married with a kid, it's awesome. I no longer need bars where I'm looking to stay out until 2 am trying to hook up. That's really all that is lacking here. Plenty of places to grab a drink or have a nice meal. If you are married living in the loop, you aren't giving up a whole lot (at least my lifestyle) to move here, except for the drive. Plus the outdoor activity level (running, cycling, basketball, tennis, golf, etc.) is leaps and bounds better here.
